Title: Petrol smell?
Post by Stes Ultimatum on Jul 6th, 2010, 11:31pm
I've got a 2.3 & after a while of driving you can smell petrol through the air vents ?

When i got home i turned the engine off, opened the bonet & could not smell any petrol ! ??

I'm going to clean the MAF tomorrow, then run the engine & have another look while the engine is still running !

Anything i've missed ???

Thanks Ste

Were you driving past Marseille?
Petroltruck in front?

No kidding -

petrol feeder or return line/tube?
Fuel rail?
Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator Valve?
Sparkplug loose?
EGR Valve leaking on the exhaustseat- while mixture very rich?

... how can a petrol smell originate from the exhaust manifold to downpipe?

Yes, with the old cars and a choke full open...

Very rich mixture perhaps? Then that is no good either.

If the exhaust leaks, thats's an altoghether different smell I remember, no?

If it's exhaust smoke, not petrol:

you maybe missing part from AC water outlet. It's purpose is to let water out but not gases in.  I notice exhaust smell everytime I park my car by reversing to downhill...
It's better to miss that part than have it blocked by debris.

Surely smell gets more annoying if exhaust or egr leaks some exhaust smoke.

Here's a good write-up  on the subject:

Checked mine today: in good shape after one year. Nicely opening up for water wanting OUT. Closed for fumes getting IN.

Mmm, petrol these days is not what it once was, could be "the smell" can be got from the exhaust as well (?)

They used to be quite distinct but I think I've noticed latterly not necessarily

Cheers for the replys,

I checked the MAF the other day & it was clean,
But give it a couple of squirts of carb cleaner anyway !

Not had a chance to get it up on the ramps yet !
But will check out the drain valves!

Thanks steve

Estates in particular can suffer from corrosion at fuel tank due to shape.Over the course of time water can lay on top of tank causing minute perforation allowing fumes to escape. We had this problem on one of our 2.3 estates, a secondhand tank from SPIKIES SCORPIOS cured problem.

The same problem can easily happen to the saloons too, they use the same tank, had mine done for the exact reason last year. Can be worth to check the filler neck is tight too, this can cause a smell. I put a new one in and coated it with thick layer of rustproofing. The shape of the tank is begging for trouble...
