Title: 2.3 Starting Problem
Post by nodge on Jul 13th, 2010, 4:53pm
Had an annoying glitch with my 2.3 scorp today. Drove to a supplier no probs. Stopped for maybe 20 mins and put some gear in the boot and then it wouldn't start. Good battery, turned over fine and actually fired up for about 1 second and then died instantly. No coughing or spluttering - just stopped immediately. It was like all 4 cylinders fired once and then stopped. Fuel cut-off button in the boot was still pressed in. Tried repeatedly with the same result. I let it cool down for 20 mins and still the same. Called the RAC out and tried another couple of times while I waited. RAC man arrives and he starts it first time. Felt a right tit.  He said he would have suspected the fuel cut-off but couldn't really offer any other explanation. Drove home and still seems to be ok.

Any thoughts on what could have been the problem?

John

fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump,  fuel pump relay overheating, possibly a wiring issue on the ignition/EDIS loom or engine loom...Camshaft/crankshaft sensors etc

Idle control valve, cracked manifold...

they can be a nightmare these ones...

Can you get an OBD scan?

Sounds like a classic case of a dodgy fuel cut off (engine) loom  :-/

Check the wires to the coil packs & also where it goes down at the front of the inlet manifold, especially where it goes down below to the crankshaft sensor  :)

Failing that, then I once had a similar problem on my 2.3, in that it was difficult to start when hot. Turned out to be a faulty fuel rail pressure regulator.

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm thinking the fuel pump relay is the hot favourite at the moment so it wouldn't hurt to replace that. Just got to find where it is. I'm sure it'll be on the site somewhere.

John

Found it - R17 in the battery fuse box
