Title: Problem with dipping mirror and parking sensors
Post by mondeoman on Jul 14th, 2010, 10:21pm
Hi,

I've got an M reg 2.9 24V saloon which has started to have a problem with the electrics. When I put the car into reverse, sometimes the mirror will not dip and the parking sensors do not work. If I move the selector about a bit it sometimes works, otherwise I have to put into park and back into reverse again.  I suspect their is a switch that turns on both of these and the reversing lights?

Do these commonly fail, how easy is it to get to the part and can you still get a replacement?

Cheers,

Simon

I would expect the reverse operated items to be controlled via the nasty electronic range  switch on the nearside of the transmission,if that is the case they are about £70,I just replaced one due to bad gearshifting.

Next time they dont work check your reversing lights

Remembering to put the hand brake hard on!

A friend of mind had a similar prob in his Jag (must ask him if he solved it) and he went round the back to check the reverse light.  Just as he got there it selected reverse and pinned him against the wall!

Or maybe just leave the ignition on with the engine off..... ;D

I wouldn't try it with the engine running ;)

I'll keep you al posted on this when it next happens. I must admit I am surprised about the switch arrangement as I thought it would just a cheap little on/off switch control them.

Just as well that there was a wall! http://livinginthepast-audioweb.co.uk/images/misc/blink.gif

It's happened to my car again and I checked safely. The reverse lights were not on when the parking sensors and passenger mirror were not working. I put the car back into park and back into reverse again and it worked, so it doesn't happen all the time.

Will it be the transmission switch and if so are their any instructions on how to replace the component?

Cheers,

Simon

The component is shown Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/trsdata.htm) but no doubt Gozz will be able to say what's involved in replacing the unit. There is a warning on this link. Could it just be the electrical connector which needs cleaning?.

Presumably reverse gear is properly selected every time?

If so can assume is not the PRNGL 'switch' at fault, but a connector downstream?

Wiring diagrams here:

About halfway down

Although according to that the PRNGL switch has got 4 separate parts in it, one is reverse switch, a second is the starter inhibitor and a fourth is 'not used'

Reverse gear is selected correctly every time, it's just the mirror doesn't dip and the parking sensors + reverse lights don't work.

No problems with transmission at all with car.

If you need to get at the range sensor it's much more accessible if you lower the back of the transmission by removing the crossmember, the heatshield may need to be removed to allow the propshaft to drop,it is worthwhile to remove the spark plug cover and ensure that the coil wires are not trapped when the box is lowered,as the back of the cylinder head is close to the bulkhead. The connector to which Simmo refers is towards the back of the switch and has eight pins, the FINIS number of the switch is 1009313.
I believe you are a perfectionist, however you may find that if you give the gear selector a little wriggle when going for reverse your lights may operate, particularly as you have not yet reached the stage of faulty gear selection.

Gozz,

Your kidding right? Is their not a switch on the gear selector that turns on these in reverse mode? When I wobble the selector slightly in the gear, sometimes it comes on when it pushed into the top of the movement position in the gear.

There is a little switch in front of the gear selector lever in the centre console, but this operates the 'not in park' buzzer, the earlier semi electric transmission had an inhibitor switch of the mechanical plunger type screwed vertically into the nearside of the box nearer to the front, that switch also did the reversing lights and anything connected thereto, but was only fitted to 12 valve Scorpios, and I understand some diesels, being a legacy from the Granada.
To fully understand your situation you should pore over the wiring diagrams for the later models ie with EEC V systems,by studying these you will be able to trace your problem.

Does sound like a dodgy switch, sure it's not as per PDF above, part labelled "Engine Control 2,9 l V6 24V EFI"
