Title: Stalling and clunking........
Post by dxt on Jul 28th, 2010, 3:34pm
Hi ... sometime ago I requested help regarding my 2ltr '96 scorp which had a nasty 'clunk' from the back end when slowing down and stopping at traffic lights etc. It felt like the prop shaft decided to stop spinning 2 seconds after the car ?? I got several replies re the prop shaft plus cv joints etc etc and even the gear box. At the time we could find nothing. Anyway in the last week or so we have had further problems with the car stalling. And yesterday it stalled on me when I was doing about 50 mph. In desperation I checked the connection to the Idle Spped control and found the wires bare in parts and the two wires were touching in one section. I repaired as best I could each wire now in new sleeves and guess what !! I've just done about 50 miles around town and no clunking and no stalling and 28.7 mpg. Could that really have cured that bad clunking.
Puzzled but pleased.

Interesting!

... well dxt it goes to show that any Scorpio - and I mean any by now - in its 12th year after the youngest specimen left the factory is in dire need of loom repair...

In your case I would dive deeper into each of your engine compartment looms' sections and inspect each section with a magnifying glass... as I did... It will always hit you when it is least convenient...

The loomparts most detoriated and infected I found are those between the huge grommet in the firewall, the EGR sensor, ABS module, the EDIS module, way in front, along the hot exhaustpipes and moist coming from below.

The big ABS connector, the two square loom connectors are vulnerable...

Then across the engine along the Injectors and the Autobox (if applicable).

Here's how that looks after 15 years and after a stupid tech-trainee loosened the cap of the expansionvessel and had cooling liquid squirt into this...

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=babpic123&target=ALBUM&id=5447060285432942433&authkey=Gv1sRgCNmu4LaW36q0hAE&invite=CKqjj7QH&feat=email&mode=SLIDESHOW

The 20 kilo engine compartmentloom in the box is one for my 24v which I found and picked up in Germany. It is about 7 meters long, includes all 4 ABS sensor-connectors, runs from front to rear of the car.

It covers ABS module and pump, EDIS, IGNCoilmodule, fan relay, EGR Sensor and Valve, connects to the two "engine cut off loom to autobox"-connectors  and through the big grommet to the EEC-V under the dash.

I had a local car-electrician (is that the word?) install this for a fixed price while I was on holiday and my Scorpio has never been a happier car ever since... like new.

So my message is - get asap a new engine compartmentloom and/or fuel cut-off loom (funny name for engine/INJ/IACT/autobox loom, see my diagram in the photoalbum)

My - was the old loom rotten...

HTH,
Ray

Hi Ray .... Many thanks for that..... if the rest of the loom is as bad as the bit I've just repaired I'm in big trouble.!?!. Sometime ago I was told I may have to replace the 'Fuel cut off Loom'. However this little bunch of wires costs at least £167 plus postage.!!! The bit I've just repaired is of course part of that Loom. If anyone has one of these in reasonable nick and at a reasonable price ?? I may be interesred.

Thanks again
Cheers david

Highlander .... what can I say. Many many thanks. I have sent you an e-mail with my address and yes it is a 16v.

Cheers again

Cheapest option is solder in new wires where necessary, but needs heatshrink sleeving on the solder joints for insulation. Plastic insulation tape is no good by itself, however the fabric based kind is useful if wrapped around the whole bundle as like extra protection

Dave there was a post recently on this forum about the effects of a bad EGR valve/circuit/sensors, explaining how fuel consumption dropped dramatically after repair. Perhaps Simmo knows where?

What I am saying is that by my own experience the three wires to the EGR Differential Sensor go bad (photo 6 in my above album); brittle, shorting and stopping the EGR circuits to function properly, boosting fuel  consumption. You may have accidentily untangled those three wires since they are close to the IACT valve, but it is a matter of time for them to go bad again.

Ray

On the 2.3 the EGR Differential Sensor is on the other side of the engine compartment to the IACT so he probably won’t have disturbed it (I assume that's where it is on the 2.0).
It's not such a hot area - not saying it can't have gone bad, just not quite so vulnerable.

Allright Tompion, perhaps this was applicable to my 24v LHD only... there these parts sit relatively close toghether, next to the heatshield of the rightbank of the engine.. most of the strands were pulverised because of heat.

I think This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1275726713;start=10#10) is the post Tompion was talking about. Post 10 is the bit he was thinking of I guess.

For what it's worth here is my own cut-of loom repair:

Red stuff is heat resistant sleeving. Note also reflective aluminium tape, also on the inside of the injector plug housing. New cables are soldered onto the remaining good ends off the original and sleeved with heatshrink.

The remainder (and this bit was originally as well) is wrapped in fabric insulation tape which was very concientous of somebody; the car used to be a fleet vehicle for Balfour Beatty and according to the folklore that has filtered down through subsequent owners, no expense was spared for repairs, like dent a door, it gets a new one, that kind of thing, so it's quite feasible somebody was paid to laboriously go through all the wiring putting insulation tape on ;D

PS I generally leave off the plastic cover especially for the Summer, gives a better chance for heat to escape.
