What model car, engine is it?
Could you perhaps locate the sound?
Left? Right? Under? That might offer a clue.

Does the ticking vary in line with the revs i.e. more revs more ticks?

Long shot: I once had an airco-pump doing this; swtching the airco off stopped the sound.

My air con pump is noisy too - you could describe it as a ticking sound.

They can sieze up in a few months or could go on like this for years.  Good thing on a Cossie is if they seize you can just cut the belt and carry on driving :-).

If its the Ultima you should have Climate  Control so your aircon will be on as default every time you start it up.

Hi Guys, sorry been busy. The ticking is coming from the left side of the block as you look at it. If I put my ear to the rail?, I can hear it quite distinctly, not overly loud though.  Lee

If heard only with ear up close to the left of the engine above the fuel rail, then probably just the fuel injectors ticking away....which is quite normal  :)

If it's loud when opening the bonnet, then check all the plugs are tight before considering a valve/tappet problem. A loose spark plug can make a pretty obscene valve type clattering noise when revving  :)

OK, so that or noisy tappet is very audible, no need for intimate ear'ole closeness to hear that ;D
