Title: over reving when changing gear
Post by mrham on Aug 6th, 2010, 10:46pm
hi guys, im new on here but as yet havent posted due to the fact you have answered most of my queries lol.

ive recently bought a 2.3 ultima estate.panther black with black leather, fully loaded for 100 quid due to it having a miss fire.
yes it was the fuel shut off loom like you said but the main reason was he had put the coil packs on wrong which again was solved looking on here lol
then once id driven it i found there was a problem with the overdrive, of course i looked on here and found an ad about cleaning the maf sensor.you guessed it its fixed

only problem i have now is it seems to hang onto 2nd or 3rd gear when changing down and revs quite hard but then finds the gear, could this be the fluid??
its got enough in it and doesnt smell burnt, could it need a filter change or is it something worse as its only this gear

its now moted for the year and bar the bushes on the front wish bones and a battery plus the loom ive not really spent any cash on it

bargain

Could be a number of things really but from my own experiences and what I have larnt from others it could be something as simple as a sticking solenoid in the gear box.

How does the box do when changing UP through the gears under normal acceleration ?

The box does change down when braking or slowing down but really should not hang onto the gears. are you doing MANUAL changes for this to happen?

hi there, i did actually mean changing up lol, its smooth from pull off and into 2nd is fine to,its just when it comes to 3rd it revs out and then finds the gear.
everything else works like it should, od comes in fine and changes down fine, its just that one gear
if your giving the beans it really revs hard before finding the gear like a slipping clutch is what i can relate it to

cheers

You could, try it with the MAF unplugged

and, try it with the MAF unplugged and changing up manually.

mrham.
The problem you describe is usually caused by the clutch appertaining to third gear slipping. If you ease back on the accelerator at the point of change,it will not slip. The situation could continue for a long time if you are gentle, but really needs the box out to cure it.

Could be there's bits of friction material floating around and aggravating the issue (getting in between the clutch plates and things like that), so a fluid change and new filter might indeed help.

I'm assuming of course that you don't know how old the fluid actually is ;D

hi guys, no idea how old it is but only seems to happen when hot, when i first use it it changes fine

so i will get a filter and oil, are these ford items only or would motor factors do the filters and which oil is best for these

cheers

They are available from Fords , also on Ebay for 45.00 plus postage. Dextron 111 is the oil your looking for.   Lee
