Title: Steering rack leak
Post by ottopmh on Sep 8th, 2010, 7:15pm
My car got a really bad steering rack leak yesterday and it can not be driven at all before the problem is cured. I will tear it apart tomorrow and have a look at the structure by myself, but:

I've understood from many different sources that the seals can not be changed. Is that due to the way it is built or aren't there suitable seals available? Does anyone know?

Thanks!

The only effective solution is to use a replacement rack. One or two people have tried to replace seals but there are no instances of success that we know of. It is a specialist job and frankly not worth the effort...particularly if it fails very quickly. ::)

I think most have opted for a new/recon rack.  I have heard that the ones from Kelly bray are good, no experance myself though.

Thanks for the hints.

It sure looks difficult to fix. Therefore I've already ordered a new one as suggested:)

I've also just ordered a recon rack from Kelly Bray's ebay store - I'll see how it pans out.  Certainly a good price at £115 delivered (24v with ss switch).

Rack arrived.

Downside is the delivery driver sideswiped the Scorpio scuffing the bumper, denting the wing and taking out the drivers side headlamp in the process!

Tried a very similar product a year ago for a leak on the rack on one of my Scorpios .... looked fine for a day or so then day three, a very large puddle of power steering fluid on the road.....

When the rack is leaking, it's time to replace it!

I can recommend a reconditioned rack for £99 from a firm in Camborne I think it is, details taken from a previous query I had with the same problem.

Time of night but I can't remember the name. They sent two for the price of one postage and I returned the one I didn't need. Very obliging, and quick too
