Title: Re: No reverse 2.3 auto Post by Dave2302 on Oct 8th, 2010, 11:25am ;D His description was perfect, it happens not lots, but quite common, rear band selects reverse with direct clutch, and also gives engine braking in 1 with forward clutch. Therefore if no engine braking and no reverse, and a clunk just before it lost reverse its done the usual and broken the rear band ;) If the box was good before this happened it will make an easy repair..... Give the old box to Stuart, and when he gets around to coming up here, I'll repair it then he's got another good 2.3 box to keep someone running !! Cheers Dave |

Title: Re: No reverse 2.3 auto Post by Stes Ultimatum on Oct 8th, 2010, 1:31pm Well I don't know about it being a good box, It had the catle grid at around 70mph, I thought it was the prop till I read about it ! Since the rear band has gone the vibration has almost gone ? |
||
Title: Re: No reverse 2.3 auto Post by Dave2302 on Oct 8th, 2010, 7:28pm Cattle grid is more of a converter issue than gearbox, but if box is built well, it seems to keep it at a minimum Cheers Dave |

As an experiment could try driving it with the MAF sensor unplugged, see if it helps? But I'd wait until the "new box" is in, not worth it at the mo. FWIW for ages I thought my box was seriously sick, then I put a brand new MAF in, honestly was like getting a brand new autobox! |

Title: Re: No reverse 2.3 auto Post by Dave2302 on Oct 10th, 2010, 12:52pm Yes, true Mike, Maf on most Fords has a significant effect on Autobox, also TPS. In fact anything that affects running of engine will affect a PCM controlled autobox on most cars. Dave |

Title: Re: No reverse 2.3 auto update Post by Stes Ultimatum on Jan 28th, 2011, 11:00pm Well Stu dropped off the box back in september ! ::) Now the weather is a bit warmer, I thought I do the box swap. I bought a new filter of eBay & got the fluid with mercon V. So this afternoon got the car up on the ramps & the back end on stands I've got as far as ready to undo the bellhouse bolts to drop the box, Everything has come undone with no probs except one of the studs snaped on the exhaust between the flexy & the front box >:( Easy repair. :P I have took the sump off to empty the fluid, wow what a messy job that is ! Let's say good job I put some plastic down ! ;D The oil was black ! & there was a lot of sludge on the strip in the sump. Tomorrow I'm going to put the new filter on the replacement box I'l take some pic's to. Steve. |

Title: Re: No reverse 2.3 auto. Update ! Post by Mike H on Jan 30th, 2011, 1:38pm Well done that man ;D That colour deffo don't look right for ATF. Even without the silvery sheen! Reminds me many years ago had a Mini auto for a couple or three years, every oil change some more metal filings came out with it. Still kept going though! |

Title: Re: No reverse 2.3 auto. Update ! Post by Stes Ultimatum on Feb 6th, 2011, 6:04pm Another update !, Well I got everything back together on Tuesday but forgot about the gasket for the exhaust manifold ! ::) So today exhaust on, box filled with nice new red fluid ! Started & was idling a bit rough!, but then the revs picked up & was idling smooth as before!. Selected all of the gears & topped the gearbox up a bit more, Got the car back on the ground & moved it around the car park so it was level & checked the fluid level once more! Went for a quick drive & everything feels good, it's clunking into 2nd ? But I'll give it a day or two for the fluid to get around the box & torque converter! But all is good ! I've got a smooth ride + reverse !! ;D & no vibration around 70 mph ! :D Again a big thanks to Stu Steve |

Sometimes when you change things it changes the operating conditions that the PCM keeps in its memory, so may just be a case that it has to "re-learn" the settings. When I did the big session last year with the new exhaust system and eveything the idle was too fast initially, making selecting speeds "lurchy". But sorted itself out after a couple of days. |
