Title: Gear lever audible tone
Post by lleewar on Oct 2nd, 2010, 1:09pm
Hi Guys, The gear lever audible tone has started to come on as soon as you press the button to change from park to any other driving position, thus it is on all the time whilst driving >:(. Also the interior lights do not come on at all.(Coincidence or what) Have replaced the headlining and have had the interior light switches out for a while. Checked fuse 36 and it,s OK. Checked the relay R16 and it is warm to touch. Is this the problem. How can I check????
Help the noise is driving me mad. Thanks  Lee

Hi Lee, you're not alone - have a read here for starters:

Ray, Thanks for the link. Right, one problem sorted. Checked fuse 36 and it WAS blown. Probably as suggested earthed out when I removed the interior light switches.  Still have the constant audible tone though. I know I can disconnect but would prefer to find the problem   Lee

Here's where the Central Timer incl. DingDongHum Module sits:

http://bit.ly/9T0mGw

You can just pull the connector and no more Dong/Hum. Interior lights and stuff will not function though. Inspect connector for loose wires while at it.

Also inspect infamous connectorblock under the Central Junctionbox, here:  http://bit.ly/dd7n2O

You can just reach up into the column and start wriggling & pressing the connectors for a loose connections. I used to have an empty 1½ liter Cokebottle on board to ram it up there occasionally   ;D

Hi Ray,have pulled connector to save my ears. Have noticed that stops the interior lights and intermittent wipers from working. Will check wiring tomorrow although I admit I'm useless with electrics but the basics.  Lee

Warm relay suggests bad plug-in contacts (I'm questioning whether the relays can be unplugged on the same other topic, I'm assuming they are). This creates a bit of resistance which is what causes the heating. Or could be the internal switch contacts are worn out. First case should be solvable by unplugging, cleaning and replacing

Lee, do make sure to eliminate this potential fault location. It is prone to leakage, moist, rattle, mechanical stress, corrosion.

All existing Scorpio's 3,500 connector contact surfaces are corroded by now, 12 years after final productiondate.

Also inspect infamous connectorblock under the Central Junctionbox, here:  http://bit.ly/dd7n2O

Mike, Unplugged R16 relay, cleaned and put back, no difference. Ray, Will check the counterblock when the rain stops.   Lee

Lee, why not try this? From the Fault Finder:

Timed functions, like intermittent wipers, heated screens, interior lights not working?

YES:

Central Timer module faulty.

Use diagnostic to find the error with the central timer:

A. Switch on ignition
B. Hold in rear heated windscreen button for a count of 10.
C. While holding the button in, start engine
D. Release button.
E. The unit is now in diagnostic mode. everything which uses the unit will beep to indicate it's fully operational.
i.e. open a door and if the door switch is ok, you will get a beep to confirm this

Hi Guys, Get this. Have left the central timer unplugged for at least a day and was going to take Ray's advice to run diagnostics. Plugged it back in and found all timed functions working as usual but the wierd thing is that the chimer does not now come on when in all the drive modes :). It seems to have magically repaired itself. I have touched nothing, go figure. Just keeping my fingers crossed.   Lee

Lee, you cleaned the ruddy contacts unbeknownst - the missus will call you a magician for another year!
