Whilst in Stevenage doing some work at my daughters my missus has been driving my Scorpio. Her Corsa failed its MOT so she needed a car so she took mine (that's the worst about putting her on my insurance policy).

Talking to her today on the phone, she says that she enjoys it but she would like it even more if the steering was not so heavy. She says it is a lovely drive and tells me that by the time I get back she will have enough muscles to do the An event in London!s in 2012.

I'm not swapping it for her Corsa; she can take it back when I get it through MOT. The cheek of her, stealing my Scorpio while my back is turned.

Yes Mike, the steering is heavy. I think that there is a bush or spacer of some sort missing from the column. I noticed that the steering wheel appears to be going in too far and the mechanism for cancelling the turn signal does not work.

It is not a problem for me but when you are next size up from a dwarf and no muscles worth talking about the steering is heavy.  (Aint I glad she does not read these posts)

Heavy steering ?
Check the U/J which joins the column to the rack - it can start to seize up.
A squirt of WD40 might help.

Thanks for the information Scorpio_Mike, I must check that out when I get back home.

This is a wonderful forum - there are so many knowledgeable people on here and they are all so pleasant. I was a member of several other forums but left them when the members got female dogy about one another. If Carlsburg did forums .....

Just trying to think why the steering column should be pushed in too far. Does the height and distance adjusters work?

Hi Mike H

I first noticed this when I changed the cable snail. I had a problem getting the nut back on the shaft. The shaft falls away from the top so I had to get the shaft lifted up, put the st/wheel on, then fit the nut. I thought that it was strange the way the shaft can move so much in the column.

I get the impression that there is a bush/spacer missing from between the st/wheel and the outer column. There has to be something missing when the st/wheel goes in so far. I checked the on-line manuals for a schematic for this but there does not seem to be one.

I take it you have read the appropriate links on This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/steermanual.htm) page ?. Couild it be that the shaft is not secured properly at the lower end?? :o

Thank you for your input. I did go through these pages and there appears to be no mention of a bush/spacer.
Your suggestion  that the shaft may not be properly secured could be an explanation as to why the shaft moves up and down; something else to check.
