Title: Gold dust ?
Post by Stixy on Oct 13th, 2010, 9:08pm
I have just changed an exhaust manifold on a 16v i have done a fair few of these now and none of them have a gasket just gold dust ? but this one is blowing :(

there is no gasket listed on micrrocat and i am unsure about using exhaust paste because of the cat .

Any ideas ?  thanks

You can make em out of Hallite,if you don't know the stuff its heatproof grey sheet laminated with steel mesh. There may be other makes but the original, which has been around for ever is made by Halls,or was back in my youth. It,s about 1/16" thick, can be cut with strong scissors and tapped out around the flange with a ball-pein hammer, the holes can be knocked out with a suitable sized ball bearing.

For the 2.3 the manifold gaskets are:

Scorpio (+)"GB" DOHC 2.3 (145PS) 4 Door Saloon RHD
Exhaust Manifold Gasket
Part Number:   7087454

Scorpio 95, (+)"GB", DOHC 2.3 (145PS),4 Door Saloon, RHD
-Gasket (Cat-Manifold)
Part Number:   7046482

On the cat it sits in a shallow recess. Pattern cats may not have the recess.

Used to be able to get Halite from plumbers merchants many years ago - don't know if they still sell it  ???

Seem to recall the days when cylinder head & exhaust gaskets were made from thin copper & aluminium sheet with something like asbestos sandwiched between...  :o :o :o
