Title: Oil in coolant! Post by ro284 on Oct 15th, 2010, 2:58pm Hi All. my 2-3 16 valve 98 estate is showing oil in the coolant, mileage only 152.000. Its a lovely car and fabulous ride. i have a 2-9 as well, but the ride is definitely harder on that, On the 2-3 i did the head gasket 3 years ago, and an awfull lot of welding to keep her going for a long time. Anyway any advice appreciated, it can only be head gasket i guess, because this is so soon could that mean a distorted head? it's not too bad a job, and i would do it again to keep the car on the road, the car runs fine, but will give it a compression test at the weekend, i dont think there is anywhere else oil can come from, or is there? Cheers Bob |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by ro284 on Oct 15th, 2010, 3:59pm No i realise that, but it may well give an indication of the condition of the head gasket. Thanks Bob |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by Matt on Oct 15th, 2010, 4:01pm has your intake manifold cracked? the 2.3's have known issues of cracking the heads when this happens, otherwise what type of head gasket did you use when it was replaced? |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by ro284 on Oct 15th, 2010, 4:06pm Thanks Matt. yes i have had problems with intake manifold and replaced this, and it was a nightmare! but did not think it had oil flowing through it! am i missing something here? cheers Bob |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by Matt on Oct 15th, 2010, 4:15pm the intake doesn't have an oil supply, where it bolts to the head between cyls 2 and 3 is the oil feed to the head (through one of the head bolt holes) on the intake side, it seems that when the intake goes and water is lost localised heat build up cracks the head on the oil way and allows the oil to flow into the water system down into the block |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by ro284 on Oct 15th, 2010, 6:32pm Thanks Matt, Are there any links or diagrams to this fault or more info please, sounds a bit more serious, does this mean a new cylinder head? compression test may ge good in spite of this possible fault! Thanks Bob |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by Matt on Oct 15th, 2010, 7:16pm Scorpio_man's link shows the crack location and as you have stated no this crack wont show up with a compression test a specialist may be able to drill and weld up the head but it would be cheaper to find a second hand unit, the head off a 2.0 16v will go on, it just ups the compression a tiny bit |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by ro284 on Oct 15th, 2010, 7:42pm Thanks very much guys. when i look at the picture of the face where the inlet manifold fits, would i be able to see any crack through one of these inlets between the valve ports? I bought the head gasket kit from an MDC center, that was before i snapped the stat housing off the manifold trying to replace the stat! Thanks Bob |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by scorpio_man on Oct 15th, 2010, 7:46pm hi there when mines went, you could see the crack with the head off the block, holding it at an angle. it was 'inside' the bolt hole. hth |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by ro284 on Oct 17th, 2010, 11:54am Thanks Scorpio Man. Did you replace the head or get it repaired, if you replaced it did you use 2 3lt 16v or a 2lt 16v, Thanks Bob |

Title: Re: Oil in coolant! Post by ro284 on Oct 17th, 2010, 4:59pm Armin. many thanks for your reply, i found it all very helpfull. so many similarities to my problem, which started with a cracked inlet manifold around the stat housing, Glad you managed to find another engine, i my not find one,(without the same problem!) at the moment i am thinking maybe to get it welded by a spacialist, in the hope that it won't happen again, but i will have a look when i get the head off. Thanks again for your help, Regards Bob |
