Title: Wierd issue (related to jerky gear change) See bel

Well After changing the fuel shut off loom, Idle control valve I ended up with a Jerky gear box.  Only between 1st and second, if I keep the rev low it not to bad, it worse changing down to 2nd to 1st ie stopping.  Anyway the car has had new plugs, I've cleaned the MAF and sadly nothing worked.

Friday was my first day back at work, I work shifts and it was a Early start, car was okay bar the first change to 2nd, problem was still there.

Yesterday up at six, out the door before 7am and the car drove like a dream, no gearbox problems and to be honest I thought something must have been out of sync, and it clearly had sorted it self.  the drive home was different, finished at 3 and the jerk was back

Today, again up at 6 and out of the door before 7am, again the car has driven like a dream, smmoth changes in the box in all gears, car drives like new again.  the only thing I can put this down to, is temprature, ie yesterday morning it was a lot colder than friday, and today was the first day my white winter (ice) warning light has been on so clearly me problem is related to temprature, ie if the car is cold it works fine, warmer and it jerks,  I'll be able to test this later on the way home, but I'm sure I'm right.

Some additional info I think is related,  I've been losing a very small amount of water so trivial I have to top it up every now and again certainly not weekly and it not going out through the cylinders, ie the plugs where fine, I believe there is a interchanger on the radiator for the Gearbox, and I believe this can bleed water in to the gearbox.

Secondly the oil is certainly discoloured, and I believe it need changing,  also the level seemed quite full so this could be where my water is going, I'm sure I read this somewhere on this forum?

Do you guys think changing the gearbox oil will cure my issues.   I can only think the oil is more viscos at a lower working temprature, and this problem certainly doesn't seem to be related to the loom and idle valve change, ie I seem to just be unlucky to have picked up three problems in a row, ie loom, Idle valve and the gearbox, but is that not the way these thinks go?

Cheers as always for your thought

Dave

Dave,

as there are auto transmission pipes which carry the fluid via the water radiator in order to provide additional cooling; it isn't beyond the bounds of possiblities that they become corroded or damaged and thus allow water into the gearbox fluid.

It never happened to me with the Scorpio, but it did on my first S Class, due to a batch of faulty radiators. The symptoms on that car were jerky gears and a white, jelly-like residue in the coolant expansion tank.

May be worth a check

thanks Baz

I've just been checking the forum techincal bit and found this

If you experience both a very slow loss of coolant that cannot be explained as well as the rapid deterioration of the autobox fluid on the dipstick, then replace the radiator and all of the transmission fluid and filter as a matter of urgency - this may save a lot of money.

Sadly it seems I have a need to spend yet more money anyone know if the Radiator on my 2ltr is one bit or two?  Need to find a cheap one, as the box is working fine at present, I presume I'm in the early stages of this, but I have not lost any water recently either, my Exspansion tanks cap was broken, so that may be why I was losing water, but I think for what I have spent on the car it not worth junking ie I presume this is going to cost me another £150 quid, but the car is sound, only done 86K and now has a new fuel cut off loom, brakes and disks all round, new coil springs and drives like a dream when right, so I'm going to get on this quick and hope I can resolve this ASAP

any detials on what has probably goin on the rad, would be gratefully recieved.

Cheers again

Dave

Has it got the extra air conditioning rad in front of the coolant rad?

Is that right guys? Not having AC I not sure ;D

Put it this way, mine don't so I got a separate oil cooler in front and below the coolant rad. It's 2L 16V

Hi Zero, I have a 98 24v that displays the same symtoms...thumping from 1 to 2  and 2 to 1 sometimes acompanied by blinking OD light. Its also very random perhaps once a month, the rest of the time I have seamless changes! ATF and coolant are normal in all aspects. I did remove the box sump...replaced the box filter, cleaned the sump (not very dirty at 113k) and renewed as much ATF as possible. Unfortunately this had no effect whatsoever. I'm inclined to think its a loom/electronics  issue due to the random and ON/OFF nature of the symtoms, but I don't have any evidence as yet to support this notion!
Curiously I have discovered that if I spank it up to a redline gearchange (1st to 2nd}  once or twice the gearbox reverts back to normal seamless changes! Not  a very sympathetic fix but in my case it happens to work.
