Title: re wire door locks?
Post by MrJones on Nov 23rd, 2010, 3:04pm
Is it possible to rewire the front doorlocks the other way round.   I ask this because my key will lock both locks but the locks have stopped working on the unlock side.

My fob still works but if that breaks I am STUCK.

Or is it just as cheep to get replacement locks?

ANY Ford key will lock your doors, it doesnt have to be the correct one for the car.

it sounds like your locks are worn/sticking so I would get the locks sorted with either new ones or a rebuild kit.

As you said, if the fob batteries fail then you will be STUCK!

The problem seems to be lack of use with the locks as the keyfob is used to open and close the doors.
I dont use a key fob anymore for this reason.

At least you have noticed the problem now, usually we find people only realise the locks are stuck once the fob batteries fail.. ;D

Have you got a second key to try?. If not a first step would be to get one cut as that may solve the problem. If that fails then it is a lock re-build. This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm) and the link 'buttons' on the left of the page will help explain how to do things. :)

You could try spraying WD 40 in the locks, see if that unsticks them...........

Errm ..... as it's central locking, all the doors + boot etc. are locked / unlocked simultaneously, can't see how re-wiring the front door locks "back to front" will make any difference (?)

NB (as Highlander above) the key cuts are only required in the unlock direction, anything that will turn the barrel will lock it in the lock direction.

I would advise getting new door lock kits.

The reason for "sticking" (not going round) is where the key cuts and lock wafers won't line up properly anymore, due to wear.

tried WD40 no difference,  the key(only have 1) locks both locks no prob but will not unlock any of them.  Can I got to a normal key cutting shop or do I have to go to fords?

Any good locksmith should be able to cut a new key BUT as you will see from the link I put up previously they need to be able to 'read' the key. Much will depend on how worn your existing key is.  :)

Or the lock wafers! A new key is not necessarily any help in that case, could even be worse.

Appendix ~  think new key(s) and door lock kits are the best bet, to be certain.

You might be able to 'read' the key yourself. IIRC there's six cuts but only 4 possible numbers, 1 - 2 - 3 - 4. The sequence is numbered from the 'handle' end. I think.

'1' is no cut at all, '2' is very small, '3' is a bit lower and '4' is deepest.
