Title: Heated Front Windscreen - Advice sought!
Post by sirbb on Jan 10th, 2011, 6:20pm
Greetings everybody!

I have a 1997 Scorpio 2.3 Ghia Auto with a heated front windscreen that doesn't work.

I have tested both fuses (working) and the relay (No.18), which also works fine.

Does anybody have any other ideas?  When I took the relay in to be tested it was suggested that it might be an ECU but the mechanic couldn't tell me any more.

Of note, is the fact that the light which sits next to the switch does not work either.

By the way, my local Ford dealer in Brighton wanted to charge me 120 pounds for testing the relay (laughable) and then, upon discovering that the car was a Scorpio, declined to help any further.  I won't be going there again!

Many thanks.

Relay was number 18 (EIGHTEEN)!

Failure of the heated elements in the windscreen is not uncommon - fuses and relays may be fine but the screen still does not work.
A dead giveaway is if the top or bottom of the screen has started to turn 'milky'.
New screen from Autoglass is around the £350 mark inc. fitting.

Thanks for this reply.

The screen is actually brand new - was fitted about 6 weeks ago so no cloudiness at the top or bottom.

I bought the car after it had been fitted and the previous owner never used the heated windscreen so we only discovered that it didn't work when I was testing the car prior to purchasing it.

Perhaps an unheated screen was fitted, can you see the connectors in the lower corners ?

Can't see the connectors . . . but it is definitely a heated screen - I have the receipt and I can see the little heating elements running through it.

Is there a way I can test the switch without having to book it into a garage for a day at an exorbitant rate?!

Please have a look at picture 5 in this manual. (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/windows/windscreen.pdf)

Even if it is a heated windscreen, the connectors must be connected to a loom. ;D

Or someone took out the relay!

It came up wrong because there was no space between the 8 and the closing bracket. IE: 18 )  Thus you created the 'code' for the Cool smiley.  ;)

The switch can be accessed by removing the Air con panel Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fasciabulbs.htm). You will see that the panel lifts off those switches which can then be removed. Do take care to follow the instructions carefully when removing the panel. :)

Not a light in the middle of the button?

Both are small leds and can be replaced with care by taking the switch apart.

Mea culpa - I was thinking of the light next to the switch with the little windscreen picture which is supposed to light when the headlights are on.

Sirbb - are you acquinted with the use of a Voltmeter/Ohmmeter?
If so tests are basic & easy; look here:  http://www.bitly.nl/76097a

The switch is selfexplanatory: remove, test contacts, replace LED if needed. Relace lightbulb if needed.

Check voltages on its connector.

However, the switch does NOT directly active the relay. Since this is a timed function it will only provide a GND to the CCM, which in turn will activate the relay by grounding it for 8 mins, allowing a PLUS to the screen's halves.

This is probably what your expensive garage was on about, suspecting a broken CCM.

Relaytest: look up contact 85 and ground it through a 12V 50W lightbulb say a headlamp for safety. You should then have a BATT PLUS on pin 87. You may also apply 12V on pins 86 and 85; you should hear a solid clicking.

The front windscreen's power I remember is supplied in two sections L & R, each with its own PLUS and grond, at either side of the screen on the A pillar.
Check for Ohms c. 1-2 Ohms.

Do check F38 RH and F41 LH.

The whole circuit is enabled by the Engine run relay for safety and cut out so test with engine running.

Let us know what you find.

the wiring to the screen runs up the A pillars, and on factory fitted screens are only connected with male and female spade connectors, perhaps they forgot to connect them or damaged the wiring in the process of removing the old screen
