Title: 2.3 auto box problem ? or is it ?
Post by scorpio197 on Jan 30th, 2011, 12:36pm
hello folks ,I have a bad feeling my auto box is on its way out .In almost seven years of owning a Scorpio this is the first time I have had a gear box problem . It started just before Christmas ,I was leaving work drove slowly down a track about 200 yards or so to the road put my foot down to join the main drag and lots of revs but did not go anywhere then the box would bite and away I would go and no more trouble .I would say this has happened about 4 or 5 times since .No other problems no noise no vibrations no OD light on .checked the oil seems ok (only used a 1litre bottle of oil in seven years for top ups )The oil is a little brown but no chipshop smell and no sign of black bits on the stick . Do you think its a case of after almost 250,000 miles it just worn up ? regards david

David.
The old box has certainly had a good innings,I have had similar happenings in the past attributable to either the MAF sensor or the range switch on the nearside of the transmission, try starting in 2nd and see if your MAF is clean as well. You never know,a little time spent before the hands go in the air might sort it  8)

thankyou for the info ,MAF has been cleaned cant seem to notice any change but I did forget to mention that the problem only seems to happen when it is very cold .I have booked it in with Danes in Norwich auto box specialists .The guy there told me he would take the filter out and check it over ,if there seems to be no serious problems he will change filter and oil and adjust bands etc ,if its serious then out comes the box and rebuild it .The cost ,about three times more than the car is worth .The wife says that I think more of my scorpio than I do of her ,cant be true can it  ::)

It is with mine, try getting her to take an interest in the car, wash / polish and hoovering to start with, then on to the spanner turning, It didn't work for me,  but you never know you might get lucky,   I know one member on here has succeeded in the first bit.  ;D

Hi,I don't want to cast doubt on any one 'Auto Box Specialist' but do you know the guy from previous experience. True Auto Box Specialists/Experts are like Rocking Horse Muck. There is a specialist in Leigh,Nr Wigan, his name is Fred Lodge and he trades as Automatic Gearboxes Leigh Ltd and can be found on 01942-677800. His premises are behind  Asda. This guy is Self Employed and does all of his own work. He did a rebuilt 4ALD box for me some years ago for my 2.0 Sierra Ghia Auto Estate.
The 4ALDE is of couse the 4ALD with Electronic Trickery/Confusion. He might be worth a phone call as a second opinion if nothing else, or perhaps because it is to far to go.
When he did my work for me he used one that he had rebuilt,in stock on the shelf, they were a common fault box in those days, indeed I believe that he used to do problem boxes for a couple of local Ford Dealerships. My car went in mid morning(rescue off the M6 at Carlisle) and I drove it up to Aberdeen in the late afternoon. Upon my return a few days later it went in for a fluid change etc after covering 1,100 miles.
My Scorpio is due in to him for a box service etc in the next week or so. I would not go anywhere else, been there, before I found him.
