Title: Display of mph temperature etc.
Post by TugW on Feb 7th, 2011, 12:03pm
The display  has changed from British measures to continental ones.  i.e. it now reads in Kilometers instead of miles and litres instead of gallons. Does anyone know how to change it back?

Change the display by pressing the "S" button .

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately it doesn't work.  I have tried pressing the set button for short and long periods but no effect at all.  Tug

Welcome Tug!

Normally this happens when you have had a significant voltage drop in battery output and the lcd display reverts to default, which is metric. You may also have noticed the needles on your dash flicking when starting.

If pushing buttons has not helped, it sounds like your <M>ode/<S>et and <R>eset buttons may be sticking. Some have got things back to normal with a brief squirt of WD40 and repeated pushing or holding the buttons depressed for a few seconds then releasing them.

However the other thing you need to realise that you may have battery problems ahead, (hence the resetting). If you only do short journeys, try taking it for a bit of a run.

Good luck

Unfortunately that is often the case.
Some people find pressing 2 buttons at the same time works.
Taking it apart and cleaning the contacts may work.
With mine it would work for a while after cleaning, but it turned out to have a poor solder joint on one of the resistors.
The buttons work on a resisistive value rather than just the contacts.

You can check the values here:

Note: the needles will flick round next time you turn on the ignition after an instrument reset.

There are 6 small springs inside the switch so be carefull how you take it apart.

I have checked the battery voltage using the 2Insrument reset technique". On "Button" this shows no change when I press the  'S; button, indicating a wiring fault or buttoncontact not operating.  Is it easy to extract the small panel on which the buttons are mounted?  TugW

Take heed of the advice on the springs when removing the front panel!

Best done inside a plastic bag ;)

Thanks Highlander. Very comprehensive advice. I shall try to follow it all soon.  Tug

If it’s been apart before it may come to bits whilst levering it out of the dash – mine used to until I fitted a couple of tiny screws - a couple of times I’ve had to retrieve the springs from the footwell.
You may even find just partly levering it out of the facia will get it to work.

Mine changed to metric after being laid up for a while being prepared for the MOT (wishbones).
Didn't know why it done that but now do.I also had problem to reset but pushing s and r buttons together did sort the problem.
Cheers

Thanks to you all for helping. I removed the switch with no difficulty and opened it without losing the springs. I cleaned the contacts on the diminutive switch contacts using a sliver of emery paper , very fine grade called crocus paper.  Thereafter it worked perfectly.  Thanks again for the great advice. Tug

Hi to you all out there. I was just about to put out a plea on the same problem albeit mine has another Gremlin attached.
I put the key into the ignition the Rev Counter & Speedo needles flew round, the on-board computer reverted to default and my trip-meter zeroed itself !!!!!!!!!!!!??.
I cannot reset the values either, albeit I have not gone for a whiz around (what!! with petrol at £5.72p/gal and 22mpg showing as average at present).  The notion of a squirt of WD40 sounds like a quick easy resolve to release sticky buttons. I am not getting the confirmation tone either.

Flicking needles is caused either by a drop in battery voltage OR happens after an instrument reset, with the resetting of the trip meter and the change back to metric you have experienced I'd go with the former.

So your battery may be on the way out..

Your mode switch buttons not operating are an unrelated fault and should be cleaned as mentioned above.

I don't think I'd try WD40 in there..

Hi Highlander. I had not reset my values, they did them by themselves in unison with the needles flying around the dials. My reference to the WD40 was based on a comment by Geoff_W in his earlier reply. I am wondering whether a light flashing over with compressed air would do the trick. I still have my upholstery workshop intact and could get an extension air down to the car, that would make it unnecessary to remove the switchgear.

Yep that was how I understood it, the values reset with the needles flicking round..

In my experience the problem is a tarnishing of the switch contacts, I would doubt compressed air would rectify that.

It doesnt take long to dismantle and clean them

Hi Highlander. I will have a go at taking the switch out and a dismantle & clean. I have taken a great deal of notice about the fail-safe'Catch the Bits Bag'. I first learned that trick when dealing with the tiny screws in my spectacles.

Hi Rooster in Scorpio. A way of checking the battery voltage is described in
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm as I was told by Tompion in reply no. 4
