Title: air con
Post by ALAN on Feb 23rd, 2011, 9:02pm
Bought a 2.3 scorpio (to run round in whilst my other car is being looked at) when i put the blowers on i have noticed that the air con light comes on, it is heavy on petrol more than the 2.9 and someone suggested that the air con could be at fault. Where is the fuse for the air con so i can take it out, thanks

The aircon shouldnt make that much difference to the fuel, must be another fault.

Easiest way to disable it is to remove the electrics multiplug on the compressor.

Will have a go, thanks... what else could cause the petrol consumption?

binding brakes, leaks, plugs injectors, open loop fuelling.

is it an auto? gearbox problem maybe?

A scan may reveal something

Especially exhaust leaks pre oxygen sensor (can let air in giving a false oxygen level).
Faulty stat - engine not up to temperature.

How heavy on fuel is it?

Alan, the fuses referred to are in what is known as the Auxillary Fusebox which is, under the bonnet, on the passenger side of the car by the battery. The battery should have....most important....a cover over it so you need to remove that first. The details of this and the other Main, drivers side, fusebox are shown on page 130 of the Handbook which is Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/handbook.htm). The link that Highlander put up will enlarge if you click on the lower right corner.
Consumption can be affected, as has been said, by many things BUT the first thing to check is the MAF. The details of how to do this, a simple operation, are Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm). It sits at the front of the engine, in the air inlet trunking from the Air filter to the throttle.  :)

Tried taking out fuses (the numbers didnt seem to match with the diagram so pulled out a few and put them back in but air con kept coming on, you can hear it. Thanks

Does the air con go off if you press the air con button?? I thought that it automatically comes on and it is for you to push the button to turn it off. That's what I do ;)

As Highlander says, unplug the compressor.

Sounds like a dirty switch pot...you could try some switch cleaner & if that doesn't work, then replace the panel...they're not too expensive second hand  :)

If you have Climate control and the air flow dial is set to WINDSCREEN then the A/C is ON by default and cannot be switched OFF
