Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by Kenboy on Mar 11th, 2011, 6:29am I had the same problem, what I discovered was were the springs in the suspension struts sit on the cups at the bottom which had pads between cups and springs eventually wear and as a result you end up having metal to metal contact, which in my case was the cause of the squeaking, what I did was to apply grease into the cups and I have not had this problem since I carry out this procedure once a year, and now (squeak free)this was about four years ago, give it a whirl it only takes a few minutes you do not need to raise the car just turn the front wheels to there maximum the cups then are quite easily accessed. Ken,I have changed many a front spring on these cars, but have never seen one with anything below the spring, the lower abutment is shaped for the bottom of the spring to fit into. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 15th, 2011, 7:57pm Hi ...i was thinking the bushes but what can wrong with them..they just have a hard nylon insert ? but thats where it sounds like its coming from ...really loud !! |

Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by Tompion on Mar 15th, 2011, 10:06pm The anti-roll bar bushes are rubber with some sort of woven impregnated lining on mine, do you have aftermarket poly bushes fitted? They do come in different sizes, assume you have the right ones. I think Simmo mentioned he needed new caps with his as they were a different shape. |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 15th, 2011, 10:45pm no idea what size they were....they were from fords so assumed right part...just asked for ar bar bushes .......... are you saying you can order different size bushes from ford for the anti roll bar? |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by Tompion on Mar 15th, 2011, 11:56pm I thought there were different sizes of anti-roll bar - although I can't find reference to it on the site. The anti-roll bar can wear where the bushes touch in which case you may be able to pack around the bush to squeeze it up a bit. |

Dave is correct. When I replaced mine recently the bushes were a different shape and I needed new caps as well. The 'old' bushes have a hollow in which the cap, which is shaped, fits. The new bushes do not have that, they are totally flat, and so the old caps do not fit and new, flat ones are required. The bushes fitted to my 2.0Ltr are F112875 and the clamps F1125639. :) |

Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by Highlander on Mar 16th, 2011, 9:18am The rear anti rolls bars have different sizes, pretty sure the fronts are all the same |

Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 16th, 2011, 1:18pm ok tks for all the advice...will get new clamps and bushes ordered and see if that fixes |

Title: help! squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 22nd, 2011, 2:16pm now narrowed it down ..front offside only when wheels straight on so assume rack maybe is the problem....are there ball joints that need greasing ? do you just pull back gaiter and expose a ball joint? any advice appreciate |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by Highlander on Mar 22nd, 2011, 3:56pm Yep if you slacken the inner end of the gaiter you will find a large balljoint, is the gaiter burst? http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/srackrepair.htm Can't see how that would cause a squeak under braking though. Can you replicate the noise by shoving the front of the car down? if so it really has to be either struts, wishbone, link rods or anti roll bar related. Definitely not the anti roll bar/bushes/clamps? |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 22nd, 2011, 4:12pm had the bushes and clamps changed this morning...link bars were changed 2 weeks ago ....ditto struts and springs cause had clunking problems...no clunks but squeaks! yes if you push on wing it squeaks BUT only if steering straight on it ...by braking i mean causing the front end to dip |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by Highlander on Mar 22nd, 2011, 4:32pm Yep I understand that. But based on how the antiroll bar works... If you turn the wheels the links rods will move, put tension on the antiroll bar/bushes and tighten them up. With the wheels straight the tension is off the antiroll bar/bushes and my theory is that this is why you now hear a squeak? Were the new bushes the correct ones? were the previous ones? on 03/15/11 at 23:56:36, Tompion wrote:
Did you change the bushes yourself? Was there much wear on the roll bar? I've seen them pretty worn away. interesting one this, will be good to get to the bottom of it. |

Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 22nd, 2011, 5:10pm the bushes were ford original ditto the clamps... understand what you mean re the pressure put on the bushes when the link rods move the bushes were fitted this morning for second time regreased etc....and not a jot of difference re the squeaking...i will get to the bottom of one way or another ...i dont give up ! |

Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 22nd, 2011, 10:12pm ok ....but the clunking totally disappeared when the link bars and bushes were changed not just a little improvemment ...gone so i assumed it wasnt related to the rack anyway going to get ball joints greased tomorrow am .....will report back......tks for advice |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 23rd, 2011, 3:06pm ok..... rack ball joints were dry; now greased and squeak gone in straight line...cornering still squeaks but not major had a mix of clunks which was link rods/ar bar bushes and struts...think thge clunks concealed the squeaks but nearly cured ,,shows complexity of front suspension..tks for all the advice |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 23rd, 2011, 6:27pm update ...having driven 10 miles guess grease has worked into the ball joints and at long last totally squeak free !! life is good again |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by Highlander on Mar 23rd, 2011, 10:42pm Excellent ;D never thought that would be the cause, were the rack gaiters split? |
Title: Re: squeaking front end Post by pedropedro on Mar 24th, 2011, 7:16am i saw gaiters come off and they were both in good condition no splits ...so grease just dried up / air i guess over 13 years ...but the squeak was very bad so good to know |
