Title: Auto dimming mirror emptying?
Post by Cosray on Apr 11th, 2011, 7:58am
Hi all,  my auto dimming interior mirror is showing an increasing blank oval - looks like the dimming fluid or whatever is vanishing... no leaks, no drops, no stains: just the blank oval, about half the mirror's side. Apparently the fluid sinks, leaving a growing blank on the top half.

Any experience with repair? Replacement? Availibility?

I did a search on this form but n/a; I found a company that does compass & auto dimming mirrors, not for Scorpio though. Would other types fit?

Any experience with them?

Can one replace the electric mirrorplate for a simple ordinary glass mirrorplate?

Anyone have a good Scorpio one available/for sale?

Curious,
Ray

Ray.
Much has been written on here about those mirrors,Snoopy had experience in the past as have others.I prefer the common hand dipping mirror which will replace your type, but be careful  when removing the base from the screen as the glass is thin and easily cracked, obviously you wouldn't need the wire which you can get at via the interior lamp.

Thanks Gozz, I did a Forum search but it came up with no results... do you have a good searchlink perhaps?

Are you saying there is a Ford manually dipping mirror that will NOT fit the original base on the windscreen?

Has anyone tried fittting standard e.g. "smoky" mirrorglass in the original casing?

Curious,
Ray

Even after heating with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive a small piece of glass came away when I removed the one on the donor.
If you are going to replace the one on your pride and joy with a standard one I would  be tempted to leave the base where it is and fix the new sticky pad directly below it.

An original "manual" type mirror has a self adhesive pad that sticks onto the black metal bit on the window. I only know that from buying a new one a while ago.

Problem is when this falls off (as it must do eventually I suppose) people stick it back on with all sorts of glue, your guess is as good as anybody's as to which ;D

If it's something like superglue then you've got  problem

I think my Scorpio was the only one ever where the whole mirror (including the mount) fell off one day....... not a mark on the glass where the mount had been!

I just went to a local autoglass and the bloke there (Gavin) stuck it back on for me with the proper glue stuff they use. Cost me a pint!

I did have a mirror which came (I think) from am M or N reg Jaguar/Daimler. It is a manual dipping mirror but it fits the base used on the Scorpio as it was manufactured by the same company that made the auto dipping Scorpio ones....

Check out EBay or the local scrapyards.....
