Title: Wibble-Wobble Post by PJDavis on Apr 16th, 2011, 8:18pm I think I already know the blasted answer to this! Please feel free to chip-in. The front wheels have just been balanced, and this was also happening with my winter balanced wheels previously. What happens, at 55mph down to about maybe 40 mph when braking lightly to medium pressure the steering-wheel 'shimmies' as if wheels are out of balance. It doesn't do it on acceleration, is doesn't do it without the brakes applied, it doesn't do it if I'm doing 100 mph and brake really heavily to get the car stationary. The car stops in a straight line and the brakes work well. The car passed its MOT in January with no advisories. I reckon the brake discs, the car has done 97k miles, the last set of discs were put on at 80k miles. Put on in March 09. (They were Bosch Discs and Lucas-Girling pads, cost £60 for the lot) The pads are still less than half worn. Or could it be the wishbone bushes? Peter |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by gozz on Apr 16th, 2011, 8:55pm No it's not the bushes Peter,it,s the discs,if you've tried the 90mph hard stop to remove standing corrosion patches to no avail, you need to get them lightly faced by someone reasonable,or failing the availability of such a person, replace em again.I've had this problem many times even though my stretches have 24v brakes, you may see pad shaped light corrosion marks on the discs even though there is little or no wear, that's the problem. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by PJDavis on Apr 16th, 2011, 11:45pm I could easily face them myself at work on a lathe, however I've done this before on a triumph Stag and all that happened was the car got 'Brake-Fade' when braking down from high speeds, I'll maybe give them a measure and see how much extra meat they've got on them, does anyone know off-hand what the low-tolerance is? This is a wee bit annoying because after any journey longer than 20 miles and when I know the brakes are warm, I'm really particular when having to stop in traffic for short stops, and use the H/Brake to hold the car whilst in gear through traffic so as not to let the heat dissipate through only the pads whilst gripping the front-discs by using the foot-pedal, thus supposedly not warping the front discs! I reckon I'll just get a new set of discs and pads for all the cost :( |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by Tompion on Apr 17th, 2011, 12:58pm Peter, There are errors in that PDF, if you compare the metric & imperial you can decide the likely correct values. For example it shows the discard thickness for the fronts on the DOHC as 2mm less than for the V6 (but the imperial is shown as the same). The original discs may have the Minimum thickness cast into them, whereas some replacements have it poorly stamped which soon rusts away. |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by gozz on Apr 17th, 2011, 3:47pm The 24v discs I use all have 22.2mm min cast in the centre. There is a man in Boston who has a special disc grinder, better than a cutter. |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by Mike H on Apr 19th, 2011, 11:42am Only just come across this, I was only going to say sounds to me also more like disc thickness variations if it only happens when braking ;D |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by Dave2302 on Apr 22nd, 2011, 4:27pm Buy genuine Ford or Mintex discs and pads, the cheapies are cr4p, and don't last half as long ;) Mintex aren't much dearer than some of the cheapos if you shop around ;) HTH Dave |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by lleewar on Apr 22nd, 2011, 9:47pm I agree with Dave on this. I changed mine with Mintex discs and pads, little more money gives a much better job. lee |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by Dave2302 on Apr 23rd, 2011, 10:37am As Lee says they are good, I've just bought a set of Mintex Cosworth Scorp discs and Pads to go on the front of the Puma, ace quality and less than 70 quid including postage, can't remember the exact figure but I think it was around 60 sheets ;) Cheers Dave |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by Scorpio_Mike on Apr 23rd, 2011, 4:47pm I put a new set of Mintex pads & discs all round on my Scorpio just after I bought it so around 4 years ago now. Have done around 25k miles since, no problems at all - cost about £80 to the door for the full set from www.buypartsby.co.uk. Would definately buy Mintex again. |

Title: Re: Wibble-Wobble Post by Dave2302 on Apr 23rd, 2011, 6:51pm Aye Peter, I think that's around what I paid off EBay, but cannie remember now as stuff is turning up on a daily basis for the Puma ;) It's just like crimble in my workshop every day unwrapping all the goodies........ Only a few weeks off firing the b****r up now ;) Trust us all, you won't be dissappointed with Mintex, I actually think they are better than OE Ford discs, which have always been a little iffy !! Just make sure all your calipers are nice and free whilst fitting ;) HTH, Cheers Dave ('The Ol' Bare Footer' ) LOL |
