Title: Failed MOT
Post by Matt63 on May 5th, 2011, 7:56pm
Took my low mileage (60k) former American Embassy 24v to get its MOT done at the Peterborough garage that the AA recommended.

£150 later they said it had failed.  Now they've come up with a list of repair items:
1)   New tyre:  £111
2)   Handbrake cable/caliper:  £122
3)   Rear fog light: £68
4)   Front brake pads: £92
5)   Rear brake pads: 105

Total £498, in addition to the £150 already spent.

Being frank, having got three other 24Vs, I had not spotted anything wrong.

Are these prices reasonable?  Does Gozz know of a decent alternative garage in the area?

Thanks in advance

Matt

Hi Matt

you can get all of those a lot cheaper,

is it a saloon or estate? (rear fog lamp is in the cluster)

brake pads can be got a lot cheaper

Prices quoted seem a but steep  :o - they must surely be for parts and labour  ???
Tyres I pay about £90 each for - 225/50x16
Rear caliper £30 ~ £70 depending on wether you have solid or vented discs & handbrake cable about £20
Front pads about £15, rear pads about £10 - basic DIY jobs.
Rear fog light - s/h unit maybe £10 & 15 mins to fit.

They reckon rear fog is damaged then?

These prices most certainly are NOT reasonable.   £111 for a tyre?   Nah, I get Avon ZV5's delivered for £73.  The rest can be had for a lot cheaper than they quote.

Thanks guys for all the comments, forgot to say it is a state blue ultima saloon.  The garage waited for two weeks until the day before it was due to go back in for the retest before telling me the prices! Will call Gozz at lunchtime, cheers!

I remember that being listed on E-Bay...I very nearly bought it, in fact I was offered it.
But then the 28k miler came up
Did it come with the flags?

Did you leave the car with them?

I think I'd have been on the phone to them before that

Still intrigued what's the matter with the rear fog, like you wouldn't have noticed anything seriously wrong with it, can't be just a blown bulb for £68 ;D

Yes, got the flags! Had a bit of a disaster day, been working away and got held up leaving to come back and only just got to the garage in time so had to leave it with them. I had planned to get back earlier and do some looking around. Feel a bit of a prat agreeing to the work but I need this one on the road asap. Prices are labour and parts, and am not having the brake pads done as they were only advisory. Must find a good garage in the area, there must be one!

Had another disaster day, the garage had forgotten to order the parts in, so all they sorted was the tyre, that didn't match the other three, for £118!  So I am still left without an MOT and feeling even more of a prat! The parts they couldn't get were a nearside rear caliper and the light in the switch that tells you that the rear fog light is on. I am definitely going elsewhere next time, and will post a picture when I get to work on Monday.

The fog indicator lights are LED's in push on rubber boots, they are polarity sensitive:

So could just be bad contacts, LED's don't blow like filament bulbs so are usually much more reliable
