Title: Poor tickover and idle
Post by Steve_Rose on Jun 1st, 2011, 10:19pm
Hi guys. Have recently done an engine swap on my beloved cossie. All went well until the test drive. When sat in traffic or stationary the engine seems to run as if its on full choke and nearly cuts out. When moving again and you put your foot down it coughs a bit then clears and is ok again. Have changed all the obvious ie. O2 sensors, air flow meter, egr valve etc. Has anybody come across out similar.

Low idle?

Idle control valve?

I think you could do with getting an ODBII reader on it.

Sounds like fuel trims are out.

Hi. I have just tried another Idle Control Valve. The one from the original engine. Sorry, no change. The OBDII stuff is way way beyond my capabilities. Is this something the average garage can test for me ?

Air leak around the manifolds?

If you're coming to Harewood you'll have a que of people who can check it for you ;)

have you plugged the MAF back in?

as stuart says, air leaks are a big killer on the cossie, and i bet its the plastic T piece

Checked for air leaks and could'nt find one. But that dunt mean there is'nt one of course. Changed the dreaded tee piece when putting the engine in as it was broken. Seems to be one of those little faults that drive you insain. Recently put a performance air filter on and think it made it slightly worse. Will be at Harewood, looking forward too it.

There's lots of little vacuum tubes though isnt there? From what I saw in drawings ~ only need a split in one of 'em

A good way to test for air leaks is spray some easy start around the manifold/pipe joins etc whilst the car is running (not a good idea to spray it on the exhaust!) and if the revs suddenly pick up after you've jjst sprayed somewhere then you've found an air leak.

Cheers matt. Look forward to meeting you and learning a lot. Hoping it is just a split pipe. The easy start test sounds like a Eureka moment. Brilliant. Will give that a go. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.  She will get fixed despite the wifes scepticism. Think she has the impression I feel more about the car than her. Shhh. As if. Ha Ha.
