Title: Hesitating/holding back
Post by lleewar on Jun 2nd, 2011, 9:23pm
Hi Guys, The scorp is behaving weird. From cold the car seems to run fine then when warmed up, weird. At speed, seemingly no problem( maybe not noticable) but around the 30 mile an hour mark, she seems to pull back, choke up, hesitate. It,s like she's being starved or something's holding her back. Any ideas. Cheers Lee

coil pack and/or MAF come to mind,

Does it do it when at that speed or from stand still and getting up to speed?

Hesitation under load ?......Sounds ignition related .....most likely the coil packs or HT leads  :)....How old are the plugs ?

Bought the car in March so do not know about servicing. Took plugs out yesterday, they were dry and pretty clean. Will change anyway. Have cleaned maf as well. Coil packs looked Ok but could swap ones from my old car.
Matt, will try to find out this morning and let you know. Cheers Lee

Trial completed and no parts changed yet. From cold start, pulling away, seems to run really well. Once warmed up and doing 30-40, she hesitates/struggles. Funny thing is when under load there's the problem, take my foot off and the problem seems to go away, quite smooth. Does that mean something specific???   Lee

Geeeez Lee we seem to be getting the same problems with our cars lol.

Mine seems to be choking up when cold but ok most of the time when warm but sometimes seems sluggish to accelerate when warm. I was going to replace the spark plugs this weekend time permitting.

As I mentioned before, hesitation under load is most likely the coil packs. They tend to start breaking down after time  :)

I'd have said that if it's OK Cold, then plays up as it warms it's most likely a Lambda sensor, as it runs Open Loop when cold ;)

Difficult to diagnose blind, but a code read and look at Live Data should revael the culprit ;)

Hi Guys, Update for you. Changed plugs and no difference. Changed coil packs, no difference.( Sorry Jonny) Next up remove cat and there's the solution. The honeycomb had dropped about one and a half inches, restricting flow. Andy, you have a lovely job on your hands to come  ;) Thanks for all your input. Lee

Lee, Have you checked your PMs ?.  :)

Thanks Lee I found out lol. I also found that the loom to the coil pack had the insulation turn to dust and where it goes round the back of the engine to a sensor on one of the  ohc had worn off as it was scraping against the engine.
I put insulating tape around the wires but it still does it so it might have come off further back on the loom as well. :(

Cat replaced and power is back, an amazing difference. But my luck , now one of the other parts of the exhaust has gone and the car has a deep growl. Still getting some hesitating/ holding back, hopefully because of the exhaust.

Check the Lambdas  :), If the CAT failed one or both could have overheated,

Dave, Changed the top sensor, still have the problem. Suppose I could change the lower.   Lee

hi there

do you still have the crack in the manifold?

also, check the egr pipework at the 'mushroom' valve for leaks.

Iwouldn't bother changing the downstream lambda sensor - that isn't used for fuelling.

Cheers,
