Title: Rear view mirror
Post by conoflex on Jul 13th, 2011, 4:19pm
I think i'm on the slippery slope with my scorpio  :'(
First water pump starts leaking now the rear view mirror has fogged up so it looks like that gone kaput. Wonder what will go next  :(
Are the Mondeo auto dip ones the same or should just replace it with an ordinary rear view mirror ?

Sat in a Jaguar XF yesterday and they are almost identical! Suspect the Mondeo will work if you get the right bracket and can remove the existing fitment if needed.

Good luck

Geoff

If it helps, looking at these they look exactly the same as the "ordinary" one I got a while ago!

These are part No. 1644638, mine was 1644639 (Mondeo) but won't come up in a search (?)

Anyway Trevor reckoned that was the one for Scorpio, and it is identical

NB: self-adhesive pad on "foot"

Re: the mirror fitment. It has been suggested that it would be better to leave the existing fitment and fix the new mirror just underneath. This was just in case that trying to remove it would crack the windscreen.

There is a "trick" to it, was written here somewhere but can't remember what it is. The adhesive "goes off" with age anyway probably so you may be lucky. My original had obviously fallen off previously, the pad removed and glued back on! Fortunately (in terms of removal) that failed as well hence the new one ;D

NB: main reason for me getting a new one was the ball joint had gone extremely stiff, oiling still didn't help so trying to adjust kept tearing the foot off...

I tried to take the one off the doner car by heating the bracket with a hairdryer to soften the adhesive, it wasn't 100% successful as a small(5mm)bit of the inside layer of glass came away with it but didn't actually crack it.

Very interesting, mine's got a black coloured layer of metal bonded onto the glass with what I can best describe as a rectangular 'extension' that comes down a bit and the foot is stuck onto that. (?) So is not stuck directly on the glass, is what I mean

Update I did the "temp fix" but stupidly fitted the plain glass back as well, so now got double vision when look in the mirror everything has a ghost effect round the edge of things, makes driving interesting tho ;D ;D

I  had x2 mirrors break the tangs around the ball joint as there was no grease there.....Ive made a point on replacement ones, with the mirror off the mount, to feed in some silicone grease well into the joint (moving the ball to all positions) ...they have stayed flexible now and I am sure the problem has been sorted...would suggest worth doing

At one time you could buy mirror and surround that had straps that held it on the original mirror.
