Title: diesel not starting any more
Post by a-way on Jul 20th, 2011, 8:17pm
hello could anyone suggest where to continue...
replaced my diesel's transmission and accidentally shorted main cable from battery to starter... so everything was okay... all the lights came on in the instrument panel but... starter made no sound... ok checked the connections on the starter, unscrewed the little wire-s nut, pulled and pushed the big red cables maybe a bit roughly... as a result the start sequence didn't come on at all... checked the fuses... all were unmelted...
any ideas what to do next?

Did you check the set if high current fuses in the battery side box? Also have you check the battery to see if its dead or very low

I checked all the fuses battery side... except the three pig ones but u can see if they are burnt...
Multimeter showed me 12.45V and the battery has "indicator" which shows green if battery is ok... how could i check it further? besides when the battery coud'nt turn over the engine in the winter then i cpould at least hear starter trying to do something... this time there was no sound at all... no clicking or anything

oh yeah... as i thought that the little wire ( white one) came from the ignition (could anyone confirm that) i thought to test if connecting it directly to the battery makes starter work so i did it. Could it have burned something vital somewhere and what???

You could run a wire from the battery + terminal to the solenoid connection on the starter.

Does the glow plug light come on?

If the short knocked out a battery cell it would show as ok but would not turn the starter. You should check the voltage of the battery whilst turning the key and if it goes below 12v then the battery either doesn't have enough charge in it or it has a dead cell.

well i already tried to connect the cable straight from the batter to the little (M6) connection and the result was blown ignition lock fuse- starter did not do anyting... glow plug light comes on...

took the white wire off from starter... turned to ignition and 12V in the wire... so power in the cables allright... what next?

I think you need to confirm your battery condition.

has the car been laid up for a while? since the winter?

Have you tried bypassing the starter solenoid with a jump lead from the starter to the battery to see what happens?

the car is driven 2-3 times a week
battery was changed in november
12.5V all the time in the big red wire from battery
11.4V to the smaller wire when key in pos 4.
Nothing happening with the starter though.

I will take the starter off from the car tonight to see what could be the problem. Talked to a friend and he has a spare starter for testing if everything ok with the wiring :)

Is the engine earth strap ok?

Sounds like it can only be the battery, solenoid or the earth

thanks for suggestion but got it sorted - i had used the wrong nut with main cable connection to starter and twisted the copper thingy inside so that the bendix clutch couldnt work... righted it and all OK again :)
