Title: I think my scorpio has died
Post by pauldo on Jul 30th, 2011, 10:37pm
I was driving back from town today and there was a tremendous rattling noise from under the car for about a mile  then it lost power  and just stopped  it would not restart  it just turned over very weakly. About 5 mins later plumes of smoke not steam poured out of the exhaust for about 7 mins. The RAC will deliver it to my local garage on monday so will get a diagnosis hopefully early next week.i am well p####d of as it has only done 50000 miles.

Might be the cat collapsed and blocked the exhaust.

thats a good suggestion  as the noise sounded like an exhaust heat shield problem i had on a previous car. The RAC guy thought it was the head gasket  but he also wanted to tow my automatic car

hi there

check and see if the 2 rubber tubes have blown off the egr valve. that would point to the cat/exhaust as being the issue.

What's wrong ith towing an auto?

As long as it's kept below 30mph and less than 30 miles in distance then it's no probs.

Towing means the gearbox will be turning internally without any oil as the oil pump is worked from the engine end I believe

So it should cause damage over time.

I once towed a 24v from London to Scotland on an A-frame at motorway speeds 60-70 all the way with the intenion of breaking it for spares anyway so wasn't really bothered about gearbox damage.

Got it home, decided it was too good to break, put it back on the road and its run fine ever since (5 years) and not a hint of anything wrong from the gearbox ???

Dunno if i'd try it with some of the newer stuff though ;D

That's a good point about the pump not working, hadn't thought of that ~ but then again as you say if there's some oil about and also the gubbins aren't under load, can't be that bad

Will the gearbox change gear under tow with engin off?

I would be asking 'The-Old-Bare-Footer' about towing an Auto-Box.   He's the expert!    8)

Handbook just says put gear selector in position 'N' (?)

Assuming it's being towed on a rope with you steering etc., book also says ignition must in position 2 ("II") so steering wheel is not locked (!!!!) also brake lights and indicators will work.

Warning: steering is going to be very heavy without power assist, also possibly brakes efficiency.
