Title: Won't Start
Post by Mottsy on Aug 17th, 2011, 10:33pm
Well I'm on my hols on the south coast, went out to dinner, got back in the car, (12v Ultima), turned the ignition, ignition lights on  but wouldn't turn over just a click. I thought it was another battery dying on me.
Called the breakdown people, they hooked up a jump starter, nothing. Then there were no ignition lights comming on, but headlights and central locking etc, still worked.
The chap checked all the fuses and all seemed OK. It's now been recovered to his garage so he can have a look in the morning.  :(

Check the big plug on the driver side inner wing. Its worth taking it apart and spraying with cleaner.

Also male sure the plug on the drivers side fuse box has been located correctly. Its a bit of Sod to get right FIRST time.

Its easy to check for a spark on the 12v its still got a distributor and coil.

Sounds like a ropey starter motor, you can sometimes knock it off the bad spot by clumping it with something heavy, just as a temporary measure.

Bad cable connection to starter motor? Bad / dirty connections on battery? Engine to battery earth strap? Etcetera etcetera....

also try taking the bottom section off the battery side fusebox, it may have filled with water and be shorting the underside of the fusebox terminals

Or in N in case the switch isn't working in P

but the lack of ignition lights is suggesting that's not the problem

I just tried removing relay 21, in the link it says "No dash/ignition lights, engine cranks but doesnt fire."
Mine doesn't crank, it just clicks.

I posted that thread after seeing three identical cases within a couple of months of each other on the forum, all cranked but didnt fire and a faulty relay 21 turned out to be the cause in each case.

Could a dud relay still installed allow it to crank whereas a missing relay wouldn't?

Will do a search and see what models were involved.

Dodgy ign switch? No power to make dash ign light light up hence also no power to make starter solenoid work?

Or as already suggested just a bad plugblock

Time to look up the wiring diagrams methinks

The reason I checked was because I'd made a note in my handbook based on the first post in this thread that said yet another thing - engine still runs - a long thread due to Woj’s fusebox fetish ::) :

I wondered that, I was thinking of putting a bit of card in the contacts to see what happened but it was starting to rain so the cover went back on the fusebox.

It's going again. :)
The battery positive leads had melted together, and a fuse had blown.
Don't know what caused the leads to melt, but a bit of insulating tape has sorted it out for now. I suspect the fuse was probably caused by the brakdown chap when he took all the fuses out one by to check them. (Had ignition lights prior to that but the engine would not turn).
Still a bit worried about what caused the leads to get hot. It was already taped up when it was delivered back to the campsite. Hopefully it was just the original insulation got a bit worn and shorted out, well she is 15years old now. I'll get it checked over once I'm back home.

May have been something as simple as lose terminals

That is feasible!
