Title: Car breakdown. Post by lleewar on Aug 31st, 2011, 1:56am Hi Guys, The ultimate has happened and the headgasket has gone on my 2.0L. The temp guage went topside real quick, steam out of the exhaust followed by water then oil coming out of the air intake pipe. Had to be transported home by the AA. Not sure if it's worth repairing( never done a headgasket before) |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Matt on Aug 31st, 2011, 9:42am You need to take the head off and assess the damage, being a 2.0 it shouldnt of cracked the head between 2 and 3 but you need to check head gasket kits are readily available |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by gozz on Aug 31st, 2011, 9:47am You will need to get the head faced because they warp, and use a new set of headbolts because they stretch, the timing chain tensioner can't be reused, they are about 30 quid.I thought to advise you of these things Lee so that you can add them to your estimate, good luck with it. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by lleewar on Aug 31st, 2011, 9:49am Funny, of all the people on this site, I kinda guessed you would be one of the first to answer :) When it went, I noticed that the back of the engine was smoking slightly. Never, ever done one before so i ask is it a pretty easy job for a first timer who,s good with his hands. The timing thing would be the thing that would baffle me. Lee |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Matt on Aug 31st, 2011, 10:05am LOL ;D Yeah the 2.0 is a pretty easy one to work on, its pretty much the same engine as the escort rs2000 and theres still a few of those kicking round Genuine ford Head Gasket only here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-PARTS-Ford-Scorpio-94-98-Cylinder-Head-Gasket-/180715658636?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a137e1d8c but id personally got for a full kit and do the vavle seals and other gaskets while its all off You can save some work as you can remove the head with both the intake and exhaust manifolds still attached! the engine pdf on the site is worth a read through first http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/engines/dohc16v/DOHC16VCHead.pdf |

If that one is a good runner, it would be easier and cheaper to just swap the engines Lee Cheers Dave |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Dave2302 on Sep 2nd, 2011, 6:39pm Lee, Hire an engine crane locally for the weekend, use the workshop manual on here for a step by step guide on how to do it ;) It is a lot simpler to unplug and unbolt an engine than swap a head and re-time it ;) Cheers Dave |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Scorpio_Mike on Sep 2nd, 2011, 10:01pm Agree with Dave2302 - swapping an engine out is not that difficult with a crane or hoist [ Anyone remember those 'Haltrac' Gantry things ? ] and basic hand tools, just tackle everything logically. I've done a fair few over the years and I'm only a DIYer. I recall feeling a great sense of acheivement when I did the first one and proved a few people who told me I couldn't do it wrong. |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Mike H on Sep 9th, 2011, 8:32pm Problee quicker than rebuilding a head as well ~ Lee what was the original problem that stopped the grey Ultima from working, I've forgotten ::) |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by lleewar on Sep 14th, 2011, 11:59am The whole front took the brunt. broken after that. Getting back to my recent car, I think it has another problem in that I can push the car backwards and forwards in all the gears :o Gearbox gone as well ??? |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Mike H on Sep 14th, 2011, 12:28pm Yeah but no but you can do that with an automatic? It's only properly locked in 'Park' (by a pin). No ratios can be engaged if there's no oil pressure, and there's no oil pressure because engine isn't running. (?) Even if they could, torque converter will still just slip. |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by lleewar on Sep 20th, 2011, 8:54pm Have seen a head gasket cure called "steel seal" at 29.99 and the write up for it and the satisfied customers are huge. Only one return out of 400. 100% guaranteed. Anyone seen it and what are your thoughts. Lee |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Matt on Sep 20th, 2011, 9:40pm Theres a genuine ford one on ebay for 30 quid I use the motaquip stuff myself |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Andycan on Sep 20th, 2011, 9:53pm I have been on the steel seal website and used their stockist locator. It stated that 2 firms stocked it close to me but when I went to them they had never heard of it let alone stocked it. If they lie about their stockists could they lie about their product? |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by lleewar on Sep 21st, 2011, 7:11pm Andy, had a bottle in my hand. It might definitley be worth a try or the one on ebay as Matt suggested. Lee |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by pedropedro on Sep 21st, 2011, 7:58pm you need drain the system to use steel seal......i was recommended K Seal and it worked perfectly & its half the price . just pour in header tank..i had a gasket or crack in head; water coming out of exhaust ...link to a youtube demo of the stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqfp3PFJQJk |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Andycan on Sep 21st, 2011, 8:09pm I agree Lee what I meant was if they are telling people that certain companies stock it when they don't then could they be saying it works when it doesn't. I also think the get out clause for the money back offer is a bit off as it could cost you more than the cost of the product to get a written report from a garage confirming your headgasket had gone before you used it. As for billy nomates you have loads here and I for 1 would have come down to help you if I had a car running and some spare cash for petrol. |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by lleewar on Sep 22nd, 2011, 10:52pm Andy, Thanks and I know i,m not alone regarding these cars but time is also an enemy. Putting too many miles on my better car so something has to be done and sharpish. Lee |

Title: Re: Car breakdown. Post by Andycan on Sep 22nd, 2011, 11:28pm Well mine is the only car I have and it spends more time off the road broken down at the moment than it does on the road but I want to rebuild it but the breakdowns take up all my time and are the priority. |
