Title: Cossie electrics
Post by Steve_Rose on Sep 6th, 2011, 6:13pm
Hi all. Got some problems with the cossie again and need to exploit your valueable wealth of knowledge.
On the way to work today the battery light started to come on when at low revs. Give it a blip and it went out. On the way home it increased to the ABS and Traction Control light coming on. First thought was the multiplugs getting water in but weather here has been dry. Then all of a sudden all the dash lights came on and all the gauges and speedo went right round and car cut out. wont start and just clicks like a flat battery but head lights are still bright.  ???
Any of you guys come across out similar before.
Cheers.Steve

hi there

i'd start with the battery first.

they can die just like that; normally a cell just goes.

then look at the alternator.

Hi. Was thinking along the same lines. Swaped the battery with one off the other scorp which i know is good. Just the same. Just makes a fast clicking sound. All the dash lights flicker. Checked all the earth wires I can find too and they are all ok.

In that case I'd start looking at the fusebox connectors - the one on the battery side first - sounds like "ye olde water in fusebox" problem - do you have a battery cover fitted?

Yeh got a cover fitted. Just had a quick look at the fuses. To be honest they dont look wet but as its now getting dark I'll have a proper look tom when I get it trailered in to work. Thanks for that. I'll let you know.

It sounds similar but not quite the same as issues with relay 21 (ignition lock), but worth trying swapping it with relay R18 (heated windscreen).

Hi guys. Got it sorted. Was the alternator. Have a slight weep from the P/pump which is of course just above the alt. Must have slowly been gathering oil.
Stuck a spare on and, touch wood, all OK. Thanks for the advice and input.
Steve.

U may find that if you clean the brushes and slip rings with petrol that alternator might be OK, that is a common problem when they get oil in them  ;)

I'll give that a go. Need to keep hold of all the spares we can these days. Thanks. ;D

Very interesting, top-tip Dave, what about electronics engineers contact/switch cleaner? A sort of degreasing solvent.... (?)

If you look at circuit diagram with alternator the brushes / slip-ring are for the field winding I believe, had a similar thing happen with my BMW R80, (brushes stuck) perversely there may be a path through to light the charge light if intermitently but too much resistance to let enough current through to energise the field winding, result, it got no output innit ;D
