Title: how do you know if......
Post by rich1 on Sep 17th, 2011, 8:28pm
how do you know if your shocks have gone?
took the wife and saucepans to the cinema last week , boys in the back and everytime i went over a bump or someyhing my exhaust was scrapping (painfully)
my boys aint big heavy lumps either , but when its just me and the wife it sails over everything!!!!
probably sounds a stoopid question but hey its me ;)

Bounce each corner of the car, it should bounce once & settle. If it carries on bouncing, then that shock is most likely kaput  ;)

Shocks are best replaced in pairs  ;).   With these cars getting older by the day & if the original shocks are still fitted, then if one shock is kaput, you can pretty much bet the one on the other side will be in a similar condition  :)

Quite sure exhaust isn't falling down instead? Did you think it was scraping on the road or something on the underside of the car?

Springs weaken over time as well - is the distance between the rear tyres and the arch the same on both sides?

well i have had a gander and i think it could be the exchaust has dropped , did the bounce test has jonnycab suggested and it was fine ,space between wheel arches is same both sides so will get someone to look at exhaust . been thinking about getting a new one anyway because of the muffler stuff coming out so this has pretty much made my mind up for me

Car is low to the ground anyway so not a lot of spare inches between exhaust and the ground at best, I used to have bits of the wire mesh around the flexi-pipe hanging down where it had been snagged on things. Been tidied up now since new exhaust last year.
