Title: Tracing seat belt pre-tensioner fault
Post by Lucien on Sep 21st, 2011, 8:23pm
We've got a four-flash airbag warning code which indicates a seat-belt pre-tensioner fault. The car is a late R-reg Ultima 24V with side airbags.

Is there a quick way to localise this fault or should I borrow a unit from the other car and test by substitution one at a time? Poking around this system with a multimeter is not recommended otherwise I'd compare the readings at the two connectors under the seats.

Maybe someone knows of a common problem that triggers this fault code?

Have you checked the connections under the seat?. They can get disturbed by the feet of rear seat passengers. :)

Yes, they look OK, no sign of damage to the connectors or wiring loom that I've spotted so far. I wonder whether it's worth just taking the seats out for a closer look?

Before I start swapping these pyrotechnics, please can anyone confirm whether the fault warning (4 flashes of airbag light) will clear by itself after x drive cycles, or whether it has to be reset manually. As I don't think I have any way of resetting it, that would be a problem as I wouldn't know whether I had swapped out the bad unit.

TIA

Have you tried pulling the under-seat connectors apart and putting them back? Might just be a bad contact.

Yes, done that, nothing unusual found. Perhaps I should do the same at the control box end of the loom.
Still not sure whether any other steps are required to clear the fault code - any clues?

I’ve had a code from a disconnected drivers airbag, I didn’t have to clear it when reconnected, so presumably the same applies to the pre-tensioner.
