Title: Boot lock malfunction
Post by ADroste on Oct 1st, 2011, 5:41pm
Dear community,

the boot lock of my 2.3 saloon has started to generate a clacking noise several times when the boot lid is opened. Normaly if you open the lid manually by the button, a key or by remote control you hear a short humming nose and the boot is unlocked. Now it sound like the lock motor tries to unlock the mechanism several times. The good news is that the lid is open. But the noise sounds dangereous.

I have disassembled the lock, inspected the switches, and opened the motor. But could not find any reason for this behaviour. Does someone has a clue, what may be defect?
Here is a short clip for demo. (http://www.vfcde.de/storagegeneral/sonstiges/RMOV0119.flv)

the white solenoid will be at fault, i expect. disconnect the plug to it and the lock should work fine..apart from not opening remotely

A broken tooth on the pinion that drives the rack within the actuating motor housing can cause that.
Only the key will work if you disconnect it - The push button on the boot won’t work.

I believe there are some variations to the wiring, you may find something of use here:

Tompion,

thank you very much. This is exactly the information I need. Apparently you have the same system as me. So I will again open the motor and inspect it more closely. Probably there is a broken tooth. Or something different is broken. I didn't pay much attention, but when opening the device I removed a small (1x1x3mm) metal sliver from the box. Maybe it was a tooth ;D

In any case I have started to look for a replacement. Currently there is a set of ignition, fuel filler flap and boot locks on eBay. We will see.

Thanks again

Regards
Armin

It's actually a motor that is normally allowed to cycle once, (by a timer) stops by virtue of the contacts being separated when it returns to its rest position, could be the contacts have moved or tracking across is causing a short. NB petrol flap lock is same sort of thing too I believe.

Also could be wiring damage where they come in near one boot hinge, might be a short across there causing it to continue.

There is a known problem with the boot hinge and the loom. If you check the wiring loom as it enters the boot (o/s by the rear seat ) it should be clipped back out of the way of the hinge on that side. IF the two regularly come into contact the wiring can get damaged. You may need to un-wrap the outer tape covering to expose the wires as often it is not visible unto you expose the actual wires. Do you have any other problems, ie: rear lights etc??.  :)

My 2.9 estate makes the same noises when opening the tailgate. Also the  courtesy light fails to turn off and the indicator on the insrument panel stays on, suggesting that the tailgate is open when it isn't. >:(

The 'open' switch isn't working then?

I guess so Mike. The tailgate opens, as I said, but the lights don't extinguish. Is this fixable?

Never done it but presume it's a case of checking out the switch and its wiring?

Guys is the switch normally closed when the door / boot lid / tailgate is shut? I.e. like the bonnet switch for the alarm.

George does this mean your alarm doesn't work either?

I think it's a different switch for the light and the alarm, but not sure however I would imagine the alarm for the rest of the car should still fuction.
I assume it’s much the same for the saloon & the estate.
On the saloon if whilst the boot is open I manually close the latch of the lock with a screwdriver the light goes out. If that happens with yours then it may be the latch not closing fully when you shut the tailgate.

On the other hand if it stays on then it may be the switch on the lock or the wiring to it - around the hinge area likely.
