Title: Wipers work in off position
Post by arlecdon on Oct 30th, 2011, 3:39pm
The problem I have is the wipers work intermittently in the off position .I contacted car mechanics and asked for their help. They gave me a test mode ; switch ignition on press rear heated window switch for 10 seconds and start car ,there were three bleeps when the wipers were tried they worked but not in intermittent I assume this means the wiper timer is faulty am I correct

Are you sure switch is in the "off" position?

Anticlockwise from top, 4 positions: fast, normal, off, intermittent. And from off, push up slightly for "single wipe".

Wait a minute or you mean intermittent mode timer isn't working?

I don’t need to start the engine, I press & hold the rear heater button as I turn the ignition on.
When I release the rear heater button I get 3 bongs (this just means it’s in test mode for timer functions).
You’ll find in this mode turning on internal lights via their switches or opening the doors or glove compartment causes a continuous tone.
The interior lights don’t actually come on in test mode.

With the wiper stalk if I press it down to intermittent the toner sounds continuously but the wipers don’t work.

It’s mentioned under electrical concerns/electric systems fail to work here:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm

It’s a good way of checking the glovebox light switch to see how safe/near to being shut the light would go out.

Thanks Tompion
You seem to know your stuff on electrics ,I must admit Im not ,help me out .When I get into the car the toner sounds continuous till I shut the door then it stops .When I do the test for  the wipers after I release the rearwindow heater switch and push the wiper switch down for intermittent the toner does not sound ,does this mean the timer is faulty Ford gave me a part number 93GG17K478BC but no ford dealership stock them ,I have tried breakers but to no avail can anyone help

It may be the timer but I’m puzzled by you saying “wipers work intermittently in the off position”. That sounds like a problem with the switch or a wiring issue.

Do the interior lights come on when you get in the car & go out after about 10 seconds? That is controlled by the timer.

I notice relay 2 in the central fuse box is listed as Intermittent wiping front screen however if I pull that the intermittent doesn’t work but I still get a tone when in diagnostic mode.

Are you saying you always get the sounder when you open the door? For an Auto that normally means it’s not in park. Probably not the problem but check the power saver fuse, 36 in the Auxiliary fuse box.

You could put a request for a timer in the parts wanted section.

Does to me too.
