Title: Temperature gauge at maximum
Post by Matt63 on Nov 1st, 2011, 3:34am
Good morning guys, just drove a short distance yesterday in my 97 Ultima Cosworth and noticed the temperature gauge right at the top of the scale in the red, so immediately stopped the car.   Got out, opened the bonnet and nothing seemed hot and the water level in the expansion tank looked normal. Puzzled, I waited a few minutes and turned the ignition to the first click. Immediately the temperature gauge went to maximum again. However, the car started normally and appeared to run normally.  Decided it was most likely a faulty reading and didn't have far to go so switched air con to maximum heat and limped home the mile or so to get home and left the car to cool.   Came back a few hours later, temperature gauge still showed maximum without even starting the engine.  Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance!

Have you changed the coolant or done any work on the top of the engine?

The guage sender is in the Y shaped bit at the front inbetween the heads its the one with the single wire connection

Thank you very much, will investigate both options. The vehicle had a new radiator fitted in the summer but it has done several hundred miles since then so that should have been Ok?

I agree with Simmo, sounds like the gauge sender is kaput  ;)

Matt63.
Pull the wire off the sender,if the gauge goes down the sender is shot,if it doesn't you have a shorted wire.
