Title: Cracked Stat Housing - Help!!!
Post by Moonchalk on Nov 6th, 2011, 4:14pm
Hi,

Losing coolant from a cracked thermostat housing.

Quite rapid, about 1 litre every 10 miles.

Problem is, it's not the front section attached to the pipe which would be a breeze to change, its the bit behind it which looks like a much harder job.

Anybody any experience of same problem?

Any docs available here?

Hopin this one doesn't finally kill off the old Scorp :(

Thanks for any help.

Mc

Sounds as though you need a new inlet manifold.
Around £40-£50 s/h or £400+ from FMD...or fit the 2.0 16V one which is ally, not plastic.
Get a compression check done to make sure you have not got a blown head gasket.

Common probs on the 2.3, check the oil and water regually as once the inlet cracks the cylinder head goes aswell, between cyls 2 & 3

Friend of mine had the same problem about 6 months ago. Used Gungum. No problems since.
Hope this helps

Still a bodge IMO, the plastic manifold is a known weakness. Aren't I glad I got a metal one ;D

This is from overheating is it? Due to coolant loss?

Hi Mike

yea id say so, quite how quickly after dumping the coolant it cracks i cant say but the cars ive looked at that have had a cracked manifold the head has gone.

I posted a picture a long time ago of the crack location, it goes between cyls 2 and 3 in the oil passage (so you wouldnt see an external leak from the head or loss of compression), and all the cars ive seen its the oil going into the water (so dip stick will look clean)

Yes there was a topic about this short while back, oil in the water and blowing it out of the header tank, not sure exact cause was finally established though

One of the changes between the 2.3 & the 2.0 heads mentioned in Ford’s Technical service training manual for the 2.3 is that “The cylinder head incorporates additional coolant bores between cylinders nos. 1 and 2 and nos. 2 and 3 to improve coolant flow”.

Maybe they introduced a weakness with that change.

Yea id say thats a good reason, would be worth looking on the galaxy forums, they have the same basic engine, they may have a better intake as the room under the bonet us less on them

The training manual is for the Scorpio & Galaxy 2.3, however it does say “The cylinder head gaskets of both variants (Scorpio/Galaxy) differ in the number & diameter of the coolant bores” & “Some openings are closed off completely to adapt the coolant flow to the different inlet manifolds.”

The Galaxy sensibly has a blanking gasket for the stat part of the manifold & mounts the stat housing elsewhere.

The Scorpio gasket has 2 tags on the edge of the gasket to distinguish it from the Galaxy which has 1 tag – opposite end of the gasket to the cam chain.
