Title: 1996 scorpio ultima auto
Post by jls1936 on Feb 23rd, 2012, 10:52am
This is my first posting on the site, although I have enjoyed reading the info and advice on the forum. it was my company car and I bought it when I retired in 2000. It has been regularily serviced by the same guy since I bought it, but sadly he is no longer with us. I feel I have been ripped off since then by  so called experts and I am lookingfor a reputable person who is familiar with scorpios in the Derby area. If anyone can help I would appreciate hearing from you.
Regards
JLS

Hi Matt
Thanks for your interest. In all the years I have had this car,( 14 plus )it has never let me down. However in the last few months the car feels as though it is bumping into gear both up and down. It happens whether I am on cruise control or not. I also lost my coolant water and my power steering fluid, although I didn't get any warning lights. My temp. gauge is always at normal.  I have booked locally for a full service. In 50 years driving this is the best car I have ever had.
Regards
Jim

In terms of the gearbox try reading through This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm). Has the oil been changed or the level checked recently?. Both can be critical. Does the oil on the g/box dipstick appear clean or 'burnt'? Similarly cleaning the MAF can have a significant effect. Was the coolant loss sudden..ie:a burst hose ?and the steering fluid I take was a seal gone in the rack?. Has this been replaced?.  :)

It would be helpful if you tell us the engine size of the car. We have to presume it is one of later versions so its either a 16v 2.0/ 2.3 or 24v cosworth.

Hi Simmo / Snoopy
My car is a Scorpio 2.0. I have had a full service done by a local garage. I have tried to insert the list of items checked in this message but need some advice on how to do this.

Does this happen:
A. always, hot or cold;
B. only when cold;
C. only when hot;
D. soon as it's driven from start up;
E. only after the first number of miles of a journey of at least half an hour to 1 hour or more;
F. does the green "O/D" light flash

It does suggest verging on LOS mode, as I had, the ECU also controls gear changing, except when it gives up because it thinks there's a fault (often, just incorrect or missing data from a sensor), in that case it does not momentarily cut the ignition during the change to keep it smooth, hence the jerking.

ECU will also raise line pressure when in LOS mode to protect gearbox from slipping.

That will cause a thumpy shift.

These cars don't have a "MIL" Light so if it's an engine related fault like TPS MAF etc it can be in LOS mode without a light being on.

Duff engine sensors can and do affect gear shift quality.
O/D light oly flashes if fault is transmission related ;)

HTH

Cheers Dave

I am out of my depth here. I realise the friendly advice given on the forum does require some knowledge of the terms used. ( los ecu tps maf) ? I will have to hope the local guy will know enough about the car to keep me on the road. I have lost app. one pint of coolant since I had a full service,( after 100 miles) He could not find any reason for the fluid loss at the sevice but is going to have another look on monday. I will try and post images of the service report with this entry.http://[/img][img][IMG]http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p528/jls1636/ScanSmall.jpg/img]

Welcome Jim, LOS: Limited Operation Strategy, ECU: Engine Control Unit, TPS: Throttle Position Sensor and finally MAF: Mass Air Flow.
This may help as well Jim to explain what these actually do.http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ccmonitor.htm

Just in case the system is overpressure or the cap is faulty & venting coolant try securing a plastic bottle in the engine compartment & put the overflow pipe from the header tank into it - see if it collects any coolant.
