Title: car runs then dies
Post by leewar on Mar 11th, 2012, 2:02pm
A friends '97  2.3 newly fitted with a 2.0 manifold. Car runs then dies after 5 minutes. Starts again, runs then dies. Wired and piped in OK. Also fans come on straight away, even when cold(seperate problem?) Cheers Lee

Do you mean fans come on ignition on/engine off or once started? Is it cutting out whilst driving or just whilst ticking over?
A disconnected temp sensor will cause the fans to come on straight away but doesn’t normally cause it to cut out, I suppose a faulty one might.

Problem solved. Thanks Tompion. Temp sensor wasn't connected properly. Also there was an air leak on the connecting plate to the egr. Now engine is running lovely. Thanks all. Lee

New problem. There is a fast beeping sound when you turn the ignition on. Car starts OK . What the hell is it and where is it coming from.   Cheers Lee

Presumably not the same as the driver's door open in gear noise (fuse 36) or the driver's door open lights on ignition off noise.
Reversing sensors/front parking sensors fitted/gone wrong?

fuel level warning?

Hi Guys, It's not the fuel level warning and the car doesn't have parking sensors, not the drivers door open in gear or lights on ignition. The beeping is fast and goes on for 15 to 20 seconds. You can start the car with it still beeping then it stops. You can start the car after the beeping stops. Confused to say the least ??? Any other ideas please. Cheers Lee

How loud is it & is it inside or outside the car?

A search here & Google didn't turn up much, only this:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1283610488;start=15#15

However my post on page 1 reminds me that engine running, transmission not in park, open door gives continuous 'beeeeeeeeeeeep'....

Ign off, light switch on (side lights not 'P'ark), open door = 'ding ... ding ... ding ... ding' ...

Dunno what beep-beep-beep- is but Gozz suggested in that topic timer module may be up the spout (?)

Another mystery solved. It was as Matt said, the fuel level warning. Apparantly the car was on  ramps. Once off and level the alarm sounded. Thanks chaps.  Lee

Car is now running but very rough. It's idling at 1000 revs and the engine is juddering. Can't find any air leaks ??? Any suggestions please. If no air leak is there a way of adjusting the air flow?? Thanks in advance. Lee

I think someone mentioned before the engine breather can get dislodged, this is the one about 12mm that goes from behind the exhaust manifold (near where the dipstick tube enters the engine) round the back of the engine & connects into the back of the 2.3 inlet manifold.
Try disconnecting it at the 2.0 inlet manifold & plugging the hole - that should test if air is getting in at the engine end.
I would say it’s best not to try and adjust the airflow.

Another problem solved :) Intake pipe behind the engine was loose, letting in extra air. Car now runs great but with high revs (1000). Something to live with?? Cheers Lee

Mine's often like that, but then 1st attempt at cleaning the throttle butterflies didn't work ;D
