Title: poor MPG
Post by blackwatch on Apr 12th, 2012, 8:20pm
im getting poor MPG out of my 2.5td
low 30 on a long run and low 20 around town.
im not heavy footed and just did a 300mile round trip last weekend and got 35MPG whilst driving economically.
never went over 70MPH and did not boot it either.

noticed few times when i did put my foot down that there was loads of black smoke coming from the rear.....turbo boost is working ok ...

full service was done 1000mls ago and a good fuel cleaner was put in the tank with less that 1/4 full.

any ideas what i can do to improve this MPG as what im getting is poor .

Black smoke relates to over fuelling. Do you have a MAF valve?

There is a MAF on the output of the air box
And that's working as if I disconnect it
I can drive but no turbo power

It may well be working but is it clean? Give it a good squirt of carb cleaner DO NOT TOUCH THE WIRE ELEMENT INSIDE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm) and see if things improve.

New Bosch unit, special order from Germany. £220+ VAT.
Used very rare and no guarantee of reliability or longevity.

Might be worth looking at MAF's from other vehicles the 2.5TD is installed in  ???

Try searching on Ebay using just the part no – I’ve bought them from other cars for my 2.3 that way.

If you google the part no you may find a list of other cars that use it.

Non generic, that I know of.

Obviously you need to check the part no on yours against the one I’ve used.

I searched around for Bosch 0 281 002 164 which I found on other posts about the diesel MAF.
0281002164 gives better results

Found this:
http://www.expressauto24.net/epages/eb8978.sf/sec131eaad8f3/?ObjectPath=/Shops/eb8978/Products/0281002164

Presumably a pattern part as somewhat cheaper than other places – although this doesn’t come with the body so you’d expect it a bit cheaper.

This place lists them but you have to register for the price but the registration page is blank at the moment:
http://tienda.edelmiro.com/auto/index.php?manufacturers_id=65&sort=2a&filter_id=320&language=en&tipoprecio=neto&osCsid=j52nqjdtdr05iuhp3kfi5cuju6

I get the impression it may be used on other cars with the VM 2.5 - but not any cheaper

I got a topic notification!!

If it's any interest there's a topic going on at the Moto Guzzi GB forum, re how the modern injected models seem to have worse or no better consumption than the older carburettor bikes!

Talking of Bikes, My 1980 Laverda Jota has terrible fuel consumption, always has had since I bought it brand-new.  Same goes for my Yam' MT01.   But both Bikes get driven hard when I get a chance to ride them.

And the MT01 with the stage two finished with the fresh pipes, removable baffles of course!

Well "driven hard" might not be helping ;D

Difficult as it may be to resist I know
