it would appear my last purchased battery has expired after four years. not enough use with too many short journeys and never a battery charger connected in the intervening period. after the system clicked and clacked I put the meter on the battery, 11.39 V. not enough. what has me puzzled though and I have only just noticed, with the ignition at position 2, the heater blower fan is quietly whirring away, even with the blower adjustment control in the OFF position. something I have not noticed before as usually it is a case of switch on with radio on and engine start drowning out all nuances. Is this normal ? ( no faulty glovebox / bootlid switches )

If you have climate control it’s possibly the motor in the climate control module behind the CC panel. It runs with ignition on regardless of the panel setting, it draws air over the temperature sensor that is behind the little grill in the middle of the panel. Mine used to be quite noisy until I changed the module.
Disconnect the HBC to check the blower motor isn’t running.

If you have a sealed battery, try pealing back the label, & see if you can top it up. They often still have screw caps.

On the manual heater version the fan does run albeit slowly and very quietly when the blower speed control is off, the only way to stop it completely is to turn the directional dial all the way anti clockwise (face vents)
Note...CC may be a different kettle of fish

unfortunately, even after removing sticky label and removing screwed caps, electrolyte level ok, no loss of liquid. b****r !

Try a battery conditioner [ Optimate - about £30 ] - they can often revive an old battery and are great for cars you don't use very often.

If the electrolyte readings are equal in all cells(with hydrometer)give the battery a good boiling with a hefty charger,this often reconstitutes them.If there is a dead cell you are out of luck.

aaaahh! the old plate buckler. brings back memories from the old 6V days. dusted off the hydrometer this morning , one cell dead as a doornail. credit card at the ready.
