Hi All I have started to get a squeak from the offside rear hub. I`m wondering if its an involved job in re-greasing the hub bearing to see if thats the cause. Any advice?? thanks fredw

Fred, The usual and classic cause of this noise is a failing wheel bearing. Best get is checked ASAP as a 'running' failure can be disastrous. :(

Yep, my money would be on the wheel bearing.
Not a difficult job but replace rather than re-grease.
You will need a hefty torque wrench to do up the hub nut.

As Mike says . The required torque is way outside the average DIY wrench AND make sure it is re-checked after a couple of hundred miles. They have a habit of loosening off. ;)

Many, many thanks for the replies lads. It does seem that a replacement bearing is the most likely job to be done.
I have regular trips three times a week transporting kidney dialysis patients to and from hospital, so I cant be off the road for long.
On a different note, I have recently found out that a long running problem that I`ve had with my aircon was due to a failing (now failed) fan motor.
To this end I found on the site the Spikies Scorpios ad, so I got in touch.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that he had moved fom Romford to a new location at Wickford, which is only 8 miles from me and that he had one, complete with box and tested for £35. So all I have to do now is get the old one out :'( and put the new one in!
I cant recommend Spikies Scorpios enough. He is situated on a farm, with everything laid out neat and tidy, and a workshop/warehouse full of everything Scorpio. I counted at least 18 Scorps of different colours and engine sizes, all clean and lined up, and all runners. He tells me that he sells all his cars with a years MOT.
Definetly not your usual scrapyard scene, Steve loves the cars and has a nice 2.3 for his own use, and he certainly knows what he`s talking about. I`m hoping that he will be able to point me in the direction of someone who can do a fast hub bearing repair for me. The aircon will have to wait its turn.

Fred. If the garage ensure they have the parts ready it should be less than half a day for the bearing. This may seem daft BUT have you sprayed the fan motor with WD. (Access through the HBC slot). We had one spring to life the other day by doing so and you've got nothing to lose. Good luck. ;)

Hi, Yes I did the WD40 trick last year when the fan developed a squeak, and it lasted up until last week when the motor windings apparently burned out. I did notice a slight whiff of electrical overheat smell, but didnt realise that it must have been the fan.
Anyway, I have now got this replacement unit which looks in good nick. Before I fit it though I would like to get some HMP grease into the bearings just to be on the safe side.

You should open the box you’ve bought to check the motor, people report that second hand ones are often very worn, although I’d say if the commutator still has half the depth of copper it’ll probably see the car out.

If you’re planning on changing the complete box you’ll need to drain down the aircon.

Hi, Yes I`ve got the whole unit, and I am going to attempt the repair mentioned. The replacement motor looks pretty good, but I may have to consider doing your brush re-alignment procedure, just to be on the safe side.

As far as the hub bearing is concerned Steve Savill is doing it for me tomorrow for £95. thanks. I`ll be back :)

That's good, is he fitting a new bearing or swapping it for a second hand hub/carrier assembly?

If you look at the end of the motor the copper is quite thick on the commutator. If it looks like you still have a decent amount left I wouldn't bother moving the brushes - mine was on the verge of coming apart when I did that.

The motors use sintered bearings so put a drop of oil on each & let it soak in then repeat a few times.

Cutting into the box was easy but I had a major fight getting it out I had to spring the front panel forward quite a lot for it to come out. However I’d made the cuts a little further back so that may have been the cause of my problem.
Take the clips off that hold the filter cover – they love to jump off and hide under the battery ::)

Hi, He wont be able to scource a new assembly in the short time that is available, but he has some used ones.
I`m not too worried because 4 years ago I remember that I had a similar problem with the other rear bearings (n/s) and my regular repairer had to use a second hand part, which is still going strong today.

RE-AIRCON
I will take your advice on oiling the bearings. There doesnt seem to be too much wear under the brushes, so I may delay re-siting the brushes until later. At least if I have to I will be able to get to the motor by cutting through the duct tape ! I just want to make sure that the bearings etc are well lubricated before assy.
Here is a question: When I started up from cold this morning I was getting lovely cooled air coming through the system. This lasted only about 20 mins. The aircon rotary switch was in the off position, but the lamps were showing lo, and the push button was lit up.
I have already removed the fuse for the fan.
It would be nice if the cooled air stayed on, but I suppose that because the fan isnt on it has a shut down feature somewhere. Strange indeed. More to follow................. ;D

Sounds like you may have a problem with the panel, you could try another reset. It works on resistance values, it learns the value in the off position during the reset. The clicks on the rotary switches are purely mechanical there are no switches as such. If the variable resistor is dirty then the off positing & other settings may change.

With the flaps open you will get forced air whilst driving along but whether you’d get cool air whilst stationary I don’t know.

Sorry, I meant to say that I get the cold air when the car is moving, but after a while a flap must close preventing any more air through.. I wont get a proper result until the replacement fan is fitted, but it seems
wierd that it works great on my first drive in the morning.

Never mind, at least I` should get the hub bearing sorted out tomorrow, then I`ll take my time getting the aircon fan exchanged.thanks for your input. cheers Fred

Replacement hub now fitted. The old one was in a bad state. I`ve got it for a paperweight!
Well impressed with the service, had a guided tour of the spares store, and steves stock. Rather fancied a cossie with full spec and only 70k on the clock, but sometimes it`s better the devil you know :D :D :D

P.S....I'm not an early riser, I get in from work in the early hours & find it hard to go bed as soon as I get in. By the time I go to bed it's sometimes daylight....I'm sure my fangs are getting longer :-/...... ;D

Good news about the hub, Steve is just up the road from me as well, well handy for emergencies
