Title: Removing rear estate bumper
Post by Pianoman on Aug 24th, 2012, 5:29pm
I am replacing both bumpers on my estate. I have got the front one off ok but am having problems with the 4 bolts underneath the rear. Mine has only 3 bolts (someione has been here before) .
I cant budge them, I have trid wd40 etc. Can anyone suggest anything?
Thanks
Tony

Tony, leave the bracket in situ.I have removed many by taking off the rear bumper eyebrows just below the rear lights. Just two retaining scews for these eyebrows. A T40 bit and an open end spanner on the T40 stub. It's tight for room but less hassle than heating up the stubborn lower bolts. Make sure both side twist plugs are still in place and have someone/something to support the weight as these rear bumpers can be fragile.

Bumper is fixed to the bracket by 2 Torx headed bolts, bracket the then fixed to the car with 2 more Torx headed bolts...these have a nasty habit of 'rounding out' ...angle grinders come in very handy.
Be careful with the bracket to bumper bolts - soak with plenty of penetrating fluid as the bolt may be seized and cause the captive nut in the bumper to shear and damage the bumper further.

Tony, same as what Mike has said. Only two T40's per bracket to bumper and further two bracket to car.
Yes, Mike is correct. Captive nut can shear. Not had one go on me yet, but WD40 etc.. should be used.

Thanks for the info. I did get the bumper off, but I think someone has replaced things before as using either method, I needed to undo 4 bolts and they where not torx.
many thanks

Just a tip passed onto me by a mechanic friend - Plus Gas is much better than WD40 for penetrating rusted nuts/bolts. I have recently tried this on my other car when the brake bleed nipples and calipers were siezed - it worked much faster.

Yes a kosher penetrating fluid would be better. WD40 is alright up to a point and for getting damp out of electrics.

Probs best leave to 'soak' for a while as well.

There's this bone of contention going on on the Moto Guzzi GB forum, lol, seems some number of members think it's an electrical contact cleaner, it isn't. And those that know it isn't jump on anyone else that mentions it on the assumption that they're advocating it as a contact cleaner, which they're not. lol .. ;D
