Title: electrical gremlin
Post by rodhgv on Sep 22nd, 2012, 4:14pm
whilst out yesterday suffered fuel line fracture at fuel rail inlet, she wouldn't start, fuel spraying everywhere eventually fired and i limped home ,on the way the tc kept cutting in but i fi.gured it may be fuel shorting out the loom. Now i replaced the fuel line ,reassembled and fired up she ran  BUT now the rear park radar stays on and when i select reverse the ign comes on. a couple of years back i replaced the loom (bran new)so i don't see how it can be fuel shorting out the wires she's been stood 48 hours but still presents the same problem ,I've had to disconnect the battery to prevent a flat battery,Ido hope someone may have an idea unfortunately i don't have any code readers and if i got one  iwouldn't know how to use IT hanks in anticipation RODHGV

Which engine mate?

cant see how it would cause any issue with a 24v but doesnt the alternator on the 16v cars sit under the manifold? may have broken the diode pack in it

Petrol isn't normally conductive?

Incidentally there was a recent story on a bike forum, somebody filled up and got a load of free water with it!  :o

The petrol leak could have washed down a load of crud and now that's in the electcs. Just a wild guess (very)

DOES ANYONE THINK IT COULD BE THE THE TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR, WOULD A SHORT HERE SWITCH ON THE IGNITION AND LEAVE A CONSTANT FEED TO THE REVERSING LAMPS ? I DON'T WANT TO DROP THE BOX FOR NOTHING , I'M 70 YEARS OLD I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET IT BACK UP (THE BOX I MEAN)

May be worth removing the plug from the range switch, bit of a feat, you may need to lower the back of the box,but at least you would prove the switch.

Got a horrible feeling its more extensive than that. "petrol spraying everywhere" implies, well, everywhere! Maybe even the fuseboxes have now got a problem. Could be an insulation breakdown caused by something dissolved by petrol or the ethanol in it.

Just had a thought, as ethanol is hydroscopic, it absorbs water, so could still just be damp left in the electrics (carried there by the ethanol). Maybe putting a blower heater under the car for a few hours might do something.
