Well the abs/traction control light came on when I went out, after already going to the supermarket. There was no sign of a problem, light coming on, before. I have checked all the sensors, get the same resistance reading on all of them. I have changed the back ones for ones I had in the garage, but I think they came from a granada scorpio, and it then would not pass the startup test. I have checked the two fuses, all ok. I have not been able to get the front ones out, no suprise there, so not sure if they are in need of a clean.

Did you take the rears out and give them a clean? Mine get taken out every time I service the car, and I'm always amazed at how much crud is on the sensor. The fronts are fairly easy to clean if you can get the car on a 'wheels-Free' ramp. Just pop the big plastic plug out of the centre of the inside of the hub and there you are!

When I had a problem with the system on my car Tompion very kindly brought me a sensor to try. The first thing we noticed was that the metal sensor was shorter and thus the clearance between the actuator ring was larger. We rasped off some of the housing in order to get it to sit deeper and that did cause the light to go out but when braking at low speed the ABS would kick in. The real giveaway was the position of the fixed grommets on the cable as they were in different postions and clearly not meant for 'our' cars.
As Peter says try cleaning the ring and sensor by removing the large plastic plug. Is it actually there?? as if they are missing it allows dirt and crud to get in there. There is only a few thou gap between the ring and the sensor head. :)

Think the Scorpio ABS sensor ring has more notches on than the Granada Scorpio one ???

Yes PJ I did give them a clean, I will have a go at cleaning the fronts through the hole. Is there a scanner that I can buy to point me in the right direction.

I think you will find that only the very top of the range diagnostic kit will read ABS codes. If you mean a hand held scanner I think you'll be out of luck.

(I have not been able to get the front ones out,) i had the same idea, but SIMMO thankfully explained that the front ones do not come out! so luckily i stopped trying,
I am having similar problems with my abs light! i have found a short to earth on both wires to rear sensors! the short is in the engine bay! so i am rewiring to just inside drivers door, and re-connecting under door trim,

It went out for one trip, 17 miles, but is now back on. >:( >:(

on my 1995 scorp the abs light used to illuminate within hours of it raining and at first i crawled around cleaning sensors and sensors greased and in position it was ok for 6months then back as before andi realised if i did nothing a day after it stopped raining all was ok again i knew when i had abs because it always activated on the las t rotations of the wheels as i came to a stop.the friendly ford main dealer said i needed a new control unit at a cost of £1800 fitted so i declined got a spare from the breakers which i never fitted on the basis if it aint broke dont fix it and continued driving it for 7 years .the only sticky point was needing a good weather forecast for mot day which was in february and with abs and airbag lights out it was a beeline to the test bay .on more than one occasion one or other light came on as i drove home clutching my pass certificate in my grubby little paws .alas the old girl is no more died of arnitel poisoning and i now have a scorp estate tdi

Take both front wheels off. Look towards the inner-wing where the wires go and you'll see a joining plug. These plugs get all clagged-up inside and in my case on the drivers side had actually broken-up the connectors with rust. Pull them apart, clean them, and either put them back together or do what I did, which is wet-join them together! If you need to take them apart after wet-joining them it's a simple matter for the soldering iron again. Sorted my problems in the wet-salty-horrid weather.

I used to clean the plugs referred to on a regular basis and then cover with waterproof silicone grease.

Both front plugs are in very good condition, no water or dirt in each. I have been out again today, off for the first trip, but then on again, warm under the bonnet. I think it may be a bad joint in the motor control box, the drill hole repair.
