Title: Speedo
Post by Jeff on Dec 13th, 2012, 6:37pm
After a very cold start yesterday evening my instruments did the old reset flick routine, but the speedo stayed at full scale deflection ie at just past 6 o'clock at the bottom  (not even on 'zero').
Does this mean the speedo has packed up, or maybe the needle has lost its grip on the spindle?
The odometer continues to show increasing mileage, but no indication of speed.
The thought of removing the instrument binnacle does not excite me, esp in this cold weather. I have considered drilling a small hole on the centre of the speedo binnacle 'glass' and pushing a length of stiff wire onto the needle to see if I can re-engage it. Had a few cheap watches where this has happened. Any ideas?? Has anyone else had this??
Sad to say, this is just about the first time my car has played up (had this one 18 months) :-(

Or slap the top of the dash

Tried tentatively to slap the dash...if you can do a tentative slap...difficult to direct the slap to the speedo though, with it being deep in the facia assembly. Didn't work, anyway.
Maybe I should give it a good whack.

The needle gets past or sticks on the ledge at the bottom. It’s driven by a type of motor – driven forward & back (no return spring).
When you do a reset watch the other needles, as they’re about to return give the top of the dash a thump, with any luck it’ll jump the ledge & return.

Thanks for the tip Tompion - I will do as you suggest. Fingers crossed....

Hello everyone, happy new year.
Just an update - the speedo flicked itself back into position this morning so I can see if I am keeping to the speed limit again...not always easy.
It's quite a strain driving a Scorpio with something wrong, not the right sort of thing at all. All tickety-boo now.
Bashing the dash didn't work, btw! Or maybe I was a bit too gentle.
