Title: Scorpio cosworth 1999 electrics problem.
Post by jacquie on Jan 7th, 2013, 8:46pm
Hi,

Hoping someone with know how could shed some light on this problem.

After being away for 3 months I came back to my car and the battery was flat, jump started the car and moved and then disconnected the battery to charge.

When fitting the fully charged battery I touched the bonnet with the body and the + term of the battery, BANG! A large spark and now the battery appears flat.

1. Locks work.
2. Key in ignition and starter just turns car for a sec as if the battery is very flat.
3. No mileage display or anything else. Int lights comes on. Headlights come on but don't dim when trying to turn it over, it does not crank over.
4. No int fan if I turn it on.
5. Alarm led does not light when key in. But does when I lock the doors.

Have checked the fuses I the help guide they all are ok.

Look forward to your help and getting my car running again.
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Could you give a clearer description of the short that occurred,eg had you fitted the battery back in place, were any leads connected, touching a terminal to ground will not discharge the battery unless the other one is also grounded.Did you first remove the plastic cover in front of the battery to give clear access ? have you checked the heavy fuses in the auxiliary fuse box which supply the main box ?.Are you sure the battery hasn't got a dead cell ? Have you connected ALL the leads to the battery ?.

Battery fully charged and placed in car. Fully connected the earth lead and started to tighten the + lead that's when the spanner shorted on body, arch mark on bonnet hinge. Thought that battery was dead so brought another that was fully charged fitted and same symptoms.

All leads connected.
Visual check of fuses in main fuse box and the aux fuse box.
Visual check of the 3 heavy fuses

It is of course best to connect the positive lead first, you should not have caused damage by arcing to ground with your spanner,I would check very carefully that you have not missed a lead off, particularly on the negative side where they slip down out of sight.
                                                              Good luck.

as gozz says check you have connected the small black cable.

you should have 2 big yellow fuses in the batt side box, check both are intact.

Positive (2 thick cables into 1 terminal) one thin cable
Negative (2 thick cables into 1 terminal) one thin cable.

All connected to correct terminals on battery.

do you own a multi meter? need to check you getting power to all of the aux fuse box.

sounds like youve blown a fuse or relay.

i doubt youve hurt the pats system or ecu.

can you hear the fuel pump whurl when you put the key into pos 2

Tested all fuses with a snap on test light and power correct.

Just to highlight I have no alarm sounding, even if I take the battery off and connect back on after 30 mins.
No dash warning lights or digital displays come on.
Electric windows don't work.

Sounds like a relay not switch giving power to where I need it any pointers on which one?

Update. Before the snow we called out the RAC the guy managed to get the car started and told us it was probably a relay.

We were not too worried and as we had an auto electrician booked for the following day.
We were pleased that the engine was running.
At this point the Head lights were flashing .

Auto electrician tested all the relays and told us that it was a faulty ignition relay which he swapped with the heated rear window relay.

At this point the car started no problem.
All the dash and instrument lights were now fully functional too.

We went to use the car it was now dark and we discovered no lights at all.
The auto electrician came back today (Thurs) with a new R18 relay which was used to replace the vacant rear window relay.

At this moment in time we have no problem starting the car, a fully functioning dash and interior, a/c, heaters, radio etc.

No alarm no head or main beam no side lights or fog or brake lights.

Have ordered a Main Fuse box from Spikes Scorpios which we will collect on Fri to be fitted on Sunday.

The probable cause according to the auto electrician for failure is ingress of moisture/water into the fuse box.

We wont know until the fuse box is fitted on Sunday so fingers crossed.

Now its a wait and see situation  ???

Before you actually FIT the new box check This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin;action=display;num=1267895931). IF the large connector to the main fuse box has been removed it may not be fitted correctly. That will manifest itself in no lights. It will go down, apparently ok, but it will be one row of pins out.

Thanks
Have tried that this morning,  taken in and out and moved it around. The side lights now work.  Intermittent head, brake, hazard and indicators.
Once you push home completely and lock  Nothing?
So on our way to collect the fuse box. :'( :'(

Well didnt get the fuse box (not at all pleased with spikes Scorpios) after running all over to find him. Wont be using him again.

I have been advised to disconnect the battery heat up the fuse box and the main connector (bottom part only)with a hairdryer  then pour alcohol on the main fuses and bottom part of connector.
This should dry any water in there.
Anyone ever tried this
:-/

Assuming you have latched it correctly sounds more like a problem with the wiring or plug/socket. Do check again and make sure the circled hinge parts shown in the link are staying located together. It hinges together not just pushed. It will latch whether you’ve got it right or not.
If it’s not correctly latched you’ll find the cover doesn’t quite seat properly although it’s not that obvious.

There are plenty of people who’ve taken a few goes to get this right & indeed some have had this problem after a recovery visit due to the repair man not putting it back right.

;D It Works.
I just used the hair dryer no need for the alcohol.
I still do not have the alarm and for some reason  I can lock the drives door with key but cant open with the key??
But so pleased that I can use my car again.
If anyone has any suggestions on the alarm or door I would appreciate it. Thank you

The door key is probably just worn. If not the lock is. If you have a second key try that.Does the key work in the passenger door and boot?. It is a fact that any Ford key will lock a Ford but only the 'proper' one will open it!. You can refurbish the door lock but try a new key first.
The alarm horn is situated behind the battery. Has it been disconnected?. Do the indicators flash when you 'double lock' the car?. :)

Where I am at this time if anyone can help:
Drivers door will not open with key or Red key.
Fob will not work have tried cleaning, etc. Also tried re programing when re-programing  It will make sound after three clicks but then press unlock  but no beep after turning off ignition Nothing?
Alarm not working although the red light flashes on dash when car locked.
No lights flash when double locked.

I love my car but I am wondering if I should get rid
:'(

Jaquie.

Does either key open the passenger door or the boot?

It sounds as though your fob is u/s. That can be repaired for £16. Have a look at This post (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1355495675)

Is the alarm horn still in place, connected and does it work?. Test it by putting 12v through it.

Keys work to lock or unlock all doors and boot but will not unlock drivers side.
Fob not working. Can you tell me who I need to contact for repair or replace. I looked at the link but the web address is no longer.
Thank you

Jacquie. He took down his web site as it was no longer viable. However try an e-mail to: philipheap@hotmail.co.uk.  Let me know how you get on. It sounds as though your drivers side lock is just worn. What about the other issue re the alarm horn?. :)

Keys: yes any key can lock either door, but correctly matching one is needed to unlock. So far this just suggests driver's door lock is worn. This doesn't take much, and it's well known problem. As driver's door lock is likely the most used, it makes sense that it's the first to go.

Fob: dismantle, carefully clean PCB 'fingers' with soft cloth and switch cleaner. Ditto battery contacts. Clean back of buttons (remove any black 'crud') until dry, but carefully. Rub over the backs of the 3 buttons with a soft pencil. Reassemble. Try reprogramming it with the car  again, see if it works now. (It must be reprogrammed again whenever its batteries are removed.)

Alarm: is this standard or after-market? If standard, LED flashing (about once very 2 - 3 seconds) while locked means alarm is working properly and all security switches tested OK. If LED isn't flashing it usually means a duff door/bonnet/boot switch.

HTH

Appendix ~ if you had indicators flash when car locked from the fob but doesn't now, something might have lost its memory settings while you were messing about with the battery, but I'm only guessing here.
