Post by dcgiw2009 on Feb 3rd, 2013, 12:28pm
I see there are 2 different tyre sizes for the12 spoke alloy what is the difference or is there a preference of tyre? 205/55 and 225/50

205/55 tyres are narrower than 225/50 tyres.  They are almost exactly the same rolling circumference.

I prerfer 225/50 tyres but 205/55 might give a smoother ride due to their increased sidewall height.

205/55 are cheaper than 225/50 (£66.79 vs £84.19 in the case of my KU31's).

205/55 = 205 mm tread width & sidewall height 55% of the tread width
225/50 = 225 mm tread width & sidewall height 50% of the tread width

205 probably cheaper.

Check the carbibles website for everything you ever wanted to know about tyre sizes but were too afraid to ask : http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html

I would always go for the 225's.   But one further I shall be going for the 55 aspect-ratio next time.   This might help with the speedo incorrection and give a wee bit better ride.

I changed to the 205/55 about 12 years ago on grounds of cost.  They probably don't look quite as good. I found the 225 would track the road once it lost just a couple of pounds pressure, the 205's have never done this, but the steering is not quite as positive.  For my driving it makes no difference
