Title: New problem!
Post by ro284 on Mar 3rd, 2013, 11:00am
More thoughts on a new problem please guys! When i was working on the abs module i accidently moved the coolant return pipe, i only found this out when the temperature guage shot right up! so pulled over and found the tube worn through by the power steering pulley! that was three weeks ago, yesterday was the first longer trip, and the engine was at its hottest this year, when i stopped a lot of water came from the breather pipe from the header tank, including a bit of steam, The engine seemed ok on the drive home,This morning it took half a gallon to top up! i lost a 24v engine because of this once! What you reckon? gasket? comp test? cheers Bob

Bob, I would guess this is nothing more than an air lock. Have a read of The Johnnycab air removal system (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin;action=display;num=1267895712) and try that. Mike  ;)

Spot on Simmo! Many thanks, it was an air lock, i had peviously noticed the Temp guage was all over the place, and also think the Stat needs replacing,The next job will be to do that, and rocker box gaskets! but thankfully not as major a job as i thought, thanks again Bob

I've just got back from Stoke doing Alan's 24v

I Found one of the fans had failed which stopped both coming on on the slow setting so the car was boiling over constantly.

Also and most importantly, I found the 2 little return hose connections on the header tank were blocked, stopping the bypass (and air bleed) from working correctly.

His car had over pressurised and blown the hose running from under the N/S head and  it was bits of rubber stuck in the tank from the hose!

Thanks for reply Matt, Good find with those bits of rubber in the hoses,  being a 24v all alloy, could have lost the engine! Which happened to my first 24v The wife was driving and said it smelt hot! pipe was cut through by a badly placed hose clamp! the damage was done  :(
I think there may be a problem with my fans, they seem eratic, when i start the car from cold, the air-con light comes on, so i switch it off as i'm hoping to warm the heater up quicker, sometimes the fans stop,Another time keep going! finding it difficult to get on top of all these things!one thing after another!  :) Bob

hi there

you'll heat up the radiator quicker (just) with the a/c on as it's a hot liquid(ish) going into the a/c condenser radiator, which then cools it down back into a gas.

24v's are iron bottom end, alloy heads.

But you're right - lifting the heads on a 24v can warp them but they usually skim down ok.
