Title: A4LDe auto change speeds
Post by bernard_slade on Mar 13th, 2013, 6:27pm
i dont know if i have a problem or not i have a 1998 scorpio turbo diesel 2.5 auto .1st to second changes exactly as i would expect but then long period of acceleration until 3rd engages at 50mph  then only on level ground a light throttle and 55 plus will 4th engage to whip back down to 3rd as soon as a slight incline slows the car below 55 mph. all handbooks were written long before diesel autos were availble so i dont know if this is normal.my manual scorp diesel was happy at35mph for 3rd and 45mph for 4th so i dont feel the auto is as good as maybe it should be. i am not sure whether the turbo is workik or not and i dont know how to check without dismantling but wouldnt have thought ths auto box would know that ---anyone know what is normal for this auto box?

That sounds like a common fault to me................

In actual fact you are not getting 3rd gear, what is happening is at 50 you are getting an Overdrive of 2nd gear, (which is almost the same ratio as 3rd gear), and the next shift you feel is not 4th but is in fact the converter locking up  ;)

Your box is actually just an A4LD (hydraulic control)  not an 'e' electronic version, the diesels had a very similair box to the V6 12V   ;)

If reverse gear is fine, the chances are it is a stuck valve in the valve chest  ;)

HTH,

Dave

thanks for that dave your analysis sounds about right i think its probably the same box as i have in a1991 sierra .that is controlled to some extent by manifold  vacuum  and i have wondered how that bit works on my diesel becaus its only vacuum source for the brake booster is the vacuum pump which wouldnt provide that info. if it is a stuck valve it sounds like a box out job and expensive  the reverse gear is fine and both drive and reverse engage almost instantaneously

I didn't think normal A4LD (i.e. not the "e" versions) had torque lock up?

My Sierra certainly didn't.

the diesel vm has another vacuum pump built into the front casing.

Hi Guys,

All A4LD's right from the word go, have lock up converters.
Some Sierra's / Granada's used to develop a problem which meant the converter didn't lock, but it should do.

The vacuum side of things is controlled by a "Pierburg" valve connected to the throttle, which gets its vacuum from the Brake Vac Pump.

However if the 1 - 2 shift is not hellish late then it won't be a vacuum problem.

You do not have to remove the gearbox to remove the valve block, it is inside the Gearbox Sump.
As your Reverse is ok then it is most likely a stuck shift valve..........

Valve Block overhaul can be done by the right person, (not a DIY job), in under 3 hours ;)

HTH Dave
