Title: Funny gear box problems
Post by Andycan on Mar 29th, 2013, 9:09pm
Hi can anyone suggest how I can overcome the following problems please.

These may be connected or not.
The auto gear selector when in D seems to have become very loose to the point that if you even touch it it knocks the car out of gear. Sometimes when you put it in D and then put your foot on the gas it seems to only want to judder but taking it out of gear and then back in a couple of times seems to get rid of this problem.
The latest thing is today after running her for around 300 miles I stopped for some lunch. When I went to leave the gearbox seemed to be locked in 1st gear even though it was in Drive. The only way I could get her to work properly was to stop and take it out of gear and put it back in again several times.

Any idea's? Is the gearbox about to die? Is it the electrics? Gear selector? Or the driver lol

Andy

Andy, You might have a look at This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autotrans.htm) particularly the lower 'box' of links. I'm sure an auto expert will be here later but this may help in the meantime. :)

Sounds like it might be a problem with the linkage, there is a part that can break or something could be loose, this isn't the same symptoms but still worth a look:

Thank you Dave. That's what I was searching for earlier. It's clearly taken from the service manual. Any idea where it is ?.  :)

Oh I forgot another thing which might be related to this is when you put it in park it goes in park but if you take the keys out and open the door the warning dinger sounds as if the lights have been left on. Also when driving you get 1 warning ding every now and again for no reason but no warning lights come on or off.

It sounds as though it is all related to the selector mechanism. The warning sound is telling you that it has not properly selected I guess. :)

In the link Mike posted look at selector rod adjust or transmission range sensor. Also look at the gear selector link in conjunction with the following.
Someone had a problem with the sounder which was caused by pin 13, see here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/autoselector.jpg

needing pushing further in, once again not the same as your fault but the pin I think is also involved in the selector mechanism so worth a look at it can be worked on from above & you can check if the mechanism that stops you pushing the lever through without pressing the button (in some positions) is working correctly.

I had a problem with the buzzer(not chime) on the gear selector
If the pin has shifted far enough to one side it may be restricting the selector. I did send photos to Mike H to post for me but I guess he forgot.
Previously I had selector problems due to the linkage-there is a crank on one side of the gearbox housing and the bearing was so worn that selection was hit and miss.

Hi I have had exactly the same symptoms on my Scorpio, even the door warning going off.
It turned out to be that the gear selector linkage had seized, rusted and snapped, which happened during my mot, so they got it up in the air and made me a replacement one and welded it on.
Hope this helps regards Ashley...

Glyn, Do you still have the photos? If so we'll get them posted. :)

Just IMO, suggests to me also that selector has slipped, there's like a sliding screw-up clamp on a rod or somesuch, sounds like it's moved.
